2017 sees the return of Roadburn Cinema! We’re thrilled to bring you a selection of films that have been hand picked to be presented to you at Roadburn Festival.
Each film will play every night of the festival starting at 6pm, on rotation, in the basement of the V39. They will be played one after the other with just a short break in between.
Riverhead first caught our attention due to the soundtrack; Ulver have provided the musical accompaniment to this film that has been lauded as “Atmospheric storytelling… a pitch-perfect dark drama” by the Victoria Film Festival.
Written and directed by Justin Oakey, Riverhead is set in rural Canada and tells the story of a feud, with Ulver providing the soundtrack as the drama unfolds.
Run time: 97 minutes
Noisey Meets: Colin Van Eeckhout
On the first night of Roadburn, Colin will be on hand to introduce the documentary as it plays first in the cycle of films. Directed by Duco Coops for Vice / Noisey this short documentary follows Amenra’s frontman at various points throughout 2016.
Colin comments: “I wanted to put emphasis on the human aspect of being a musician; everybody always pictures us living in cellars drinking blood from skulls, but there’s more to our lives than that. You see my mom, my kids, my work, rehearsal space, some spots where it all began for Amenra in the skatepark… you see what its really like behind the scenes. The free moments we have in our lives we dedicate it all to art, creation and music. We want to give form to that world inside our heads.”
The Colossus of Destiny: A Melvins Tale
“I always thought it was strange that people didn’t know more about The Melvins and I felt their story needed to be told.” says director and co-producer, Bob Hannum of the film. And tell it they do, as Bob and his co-producer Ryan Sutherby dive into the band’s rich, 30 year history, including interviews with with Mike Patton, Chris Cornell, Jello Biafra, Gene Simmons, Krist Novoselic, Mark Arm, J. Mascis, Josh Homme, David Yow and many more.
Featuring behind the scenes footage from their early days, The Colossus Of Destiny – A Melvins Tale is a film about a band who have defied all the rules, for over 33 years and counting, and still managed to succeed and do it their own way – which is absolutely something we can get behind!
Road to Roadburn
In 2016, Roadburn Festival played host to Italian doom-psych trio, Nibiru. As the band made preparations to head to Tilburg, they documented their journey – both literally and metaphorically – as they got themselves ready to perform in front of an eager Roadburn crowd.
Directed by Corrado Wolf De Sio and Valeria Palermo, Road to Roadburn is a true rockumentary charting the ups and downs of Nibiru’s voyage to Roadburn. In 2017, we’re thrilled to host the premiere of this fantastic film.

This year we wanted to mark the end of twelve months of fantastic music in a slightly different way to how we usually do. We are surrounded by “best of” and year end lists, and this is kind of another one… but instead of ranking albums, peaking with the “best” one of […]

We are truly spoiled by Ulver at Roadburn, let’s face it. Back in 2012, they delighted us with the first and only rendition of the songs on Childhood’s End, their album of obscure 60s psychedelia covers. It was a unique and unrepeatable treat that still resonates deeply within our collective […]

Lovingly pinched from Louder Than War: Sunn O))) can stake a rightful claim to being one of the most important metal bands of our time. Ever since they emerged out of Seattle in 1996 their releases and live shows have become the stuff of legend. They are both prolific and […]

Lovingly pinched from Echoes And Dust: Using the word “incomparable” to describe a band is something that has become all too commonplace. Such are the multi-layered inferences behind the attribution of such a term to an artist that it is one of the few adjectives of its type that really […]

Lovingly pichded from Bloody Good Horror: I’ve often wondered how much our experiences color the way we look at the music we love, whether the time in our lives we encounter certain sounds will forever define the impact certain records will have on us. I ponder this because of Ulver‘s […]

Ulver‘s heavy psych set at Roadburn 2012 was truly a flashback to the late 60s; don’t take the brown acid, but watch the clips below.

Many excellent records came out in 2011. We don’t pretend to be arbiters of taste, we just think it’s fun to share which albums rocked our worlds, soothed our souls, lifted our spirits or otherwise burrowed into our systems this year. Of course, in addition to occupying our turntables, many […]

Lovingly pinched from Terrorizer: Ulver are anything but predictable. From black metal purists to cathartic soundscapes, their entire career serves as a lesson in both musical evolution and experimentation. Wars Of The Roses, the band’s eighth studio album, is their first since they began touring just shy of two years […]
