Album of the day: Lord Vicar – Signs of Osiris
Posted on Friday, December 16th, 2011
Lovingly pinched from HellrideMusic.com: I’m going to keep the backstory short on this one. The astute doom disciple needs no introduction when it comes to Lord Vicar; the roaring, raging sequel to Reverend Bizarre featuring a who’s who roster of doom-metal legends. But, I think it’d be a damn shame if I didn’t at least attempt to introduce the players to you in case you just boarded the good ship Hellride in very recent times, and are just figuring out what this doom stuff is all about.

We’ve got Kimi Karki aka Peter Vicar (Reverend Bizarre, Orne) on guitar, the flexible pipes of Chritus behind the microphone (Count Raven, Saint Vitus, Terra Firma), Gareth Millsted smashing the cans (Centurions Ghost, End of Level Boss), and Jussi Myllykoski on bass (no other bands that I know of, but it don’t matter!)… and boy do they dig in deep on Signs of Osiris, the band’s sophomore outing following up the very, very solid Fear no Pain.
Of the band’s two full-length outings (I can’t comment on the splits, because I haven’t picked any up yet), I think Signs of Osiris is the better of the two, a doom metal State of the Union Address which encapsulates just about everything that this particular genre of sprawling heavy rock is all about…the sadness, the beauty, the fear, the misery, the subdued tension, the cathartic release, the atmosphere, the ethic, the riff, and the groove. Feel free to add your own partridge in a pear tree to that list!

Praise for Orchid‘s Capricorn from San Francisco’s aQuarius Records: Once again, not to be confused with the old sceamo band THE Orchid, but yes very much to be confused with BLACK SABBATH, that’s their schtick as it were, this Bay Area based doom metal act now offering up their debut ...read more

Album of the day: Sigiriya – Return to Earth

Lovingly pinched from The Obelisk: The much-missed British stoner rock outfit Acrimony released their last studio full-length in 1996’s Tumuli Shroomaroom. Splits followed with Iron Rainbow and Church of Misery, and the Leaf Hound Records compilation Bong on – Live Long! followed in 2007, but the band effectively broke up ...read more
