Terrorizer Band of the Day: HOUR OF 13

Posted on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Find out why our good friends over at Terrorizer picked Hour of 13 as band of the day Who said you needed to be one über-evil BM band to spit forth the vilest abominations possible? The beauty of Hour of 13, purveyors of ‘true occult doom’ as they‘re saying, is that not only this US duo have learnt and properly digested all their chops from the darkest corners of the NWOBHM movement – think Pagan Altar or Witchfynder  General riding with the devil on a moonless night – but they’ve also penned the kind of blasphemous lyrics even Glen Benton would find offensive. Blame it on multi-instrumentist Chad Davis, ex-Demoncy, new drummer of Father Befouled and hundreds more or less short-lived black or death bands/projects. And if you’ve recently feel under the spell of The Devil’s Blood for example, you’d be well-advised to enter their cult.

Hour of 13

After one critically-acclaimed eponymous debut two years ago, a well publicized fall-out with their former label and a short period of line-up instability, the original duo, rounded on vocals by Philip Swanson from the criminally-underrated and now sadly defunct Upward of Endtime, Hour of 13 are about to release both The Ritualist, their second full-lenght on German label Eyes Like Snow, and their first seven inches on Svart records from Finland, the later including a Saint Vitus cover (“Darkness”) on its B-side.

Here’s what Terrorizer’s Oliver ‘Zoltar’ Badin had to say about  Hour of 13’s eponymous debut full-length: Funny how sometimes after you’ve spent years absorbing all kinds of metal you’re easily drawn back to where it all started: hot on the heels of Pagan Altar’s amazing comeback and Witchfinder General’s recent collections, the NWOBHM movement seems to be more alive than ever in 2008, more keen than ever to embrace a classic doom metal sound, a great example of which can be found here by Hour Of 13.

Hour of 13 - Hour of 13

The true beauty of their eponymous debut is to be found in its lyrics, sung by great vocalist Phil Swanson, also frontman of the sadly overlooked Upwards Of Endtime. Penned by multi-instrumentist and former black-metal musician Chad Davies, they’re picturing a Hammer movie-like world of satanic rituals and sacrificed virgins, all for the glory of the Great Horned One. Scary stuff! -Oliver ‘Zoltar’ Badin, Roadburn.com, March 2008.
