Album of the day: Elks – Destined For The Sun

Lovingly pinched from About.com: Heavy Metal: Brooklyn, NY-based Elks recently signed to TeePee Records and released their debut album, Destined For The Sun. A lean, tight work, clocking in at 22 minutes, it combines shoegaze and sludge metal with psychedelic punk rock. The sound is gritty and unpretentious, while the lyrics contain an unexpectedly complex science fiction narrative. This combination of sludgy, garage-influenced sounds and sophisticated storytelling makes Elks a young band to notice.
The guitars caught my attention immediately, full of chugging rhythms and a crunchy tone that work brilliantly with the thinned out, distorted production of Southern sludge. Destined For The Sun keeps the energy level high by eschewing the weight and lumbering slowness of most sludge by incorporating punk riff structures and big, steady, crashing drums. The rhythm and pace of the album gallop forward, reminding me pointedly of Mastodon, Kylesa and Baroness.
