FM Brussel: Mental Roadburn Report

Posted on Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

What’s the loudest and heaviest program that FM Brussel 98.8 has to offer? Mental! Metal, death, black, doom, stoner, rock and roll, punk, hardcore: as long as it’s loud, heavy, mean, ugly, extreme, filthy, fast, underground, or any combination of the above, Mental is where you will hear it.

In April 2011, Mental hosts Saïd and Geert escaped from the studio and descended on Tilburg, where they proceeded to collar unsuspecting fans, café employees, 013 volunteers, crew, photographers, artists and band members all in the name of cracking the Roadburn code.

Shifting between Flemish, Dutch, English and French with the speed and enthusiasm of Dan Mongrain’s fret work, the tireless Mental duo scoured the festival in search of answers to such questions as: What is it about this festival that draws rabid music lovers from around the world? Why do bands love playing here? Who comes up with the Roadburn menus at local restaurants?

TUNE IN and hear what everyone had to say, including Roadburn organizers Walter and Jurgen, Louise (Terrorizer Magazine), Bobby and Victor (Pentagram / Place of Skulls), Blacky (Voivod), Marcel (Astrosoniq / SpaceJam Recordings), David (Roadburn 2011 artist), Ester Segarra (photographer/ listen here), André (Aardschok magazine), various volunteers and plenty of new and returning Roadburn festivalgoers!

Roadburn Festival 2011 – Day 3 (by Transylvanian Hungerrr)

Posted on Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

If with each word we win a victory over nothingness, it is only the better to endure its reign. We die in proportion with the words which we fling around us…Those who speak have no secrets. And we all speak. We betray ourselves, we exhibit our heart; executioner of the […]

Get On The Dyke & Ride! Jamie Thomson Cycles To Roadburn In The Netherlands (The Quietus)

Posted on Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Intrepid man of pedal and metal Jamie Thomson tells the tale of his mission to cycle to the Roadburn Festival: featuring ferries, dykes, windmills, heaviosity, rude signage, useless national cycle trails, and 345 cheese & ham toasties. “But why?” That was the incredulous response I frequently received when I told […]

Ghost – Roadburn 2011: Qualitly Fan Filmed Video Footage On Line!

Posted on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Last month, Ghost delighted an unsuspecting crowd of new devotees with a phantasmal performance at the 2011 Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland. The incorporeal beings were captured by a lucky attendee who – by posting the footage online – spreads the sect’s sacrilegious scripture to new and nescient minds across […]

Roadburn Festival 2011 – Day 2 (by Transylvanian Hungerrr)

Posted on Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

I remember clearly that I didn’t sleep too much after the first night. Maybe because I was too tired after that marathon and partly because I was still in shock over what happened during the previous day – mostly due to Wovenhand’s performance. Nothing was quite the same after that […]

Caspar Brötzmann Massaker Performing Massaker at Roadburn 2011 (Video Available)

Posted on Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

“The Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, which came out of nowhere and knocked my socks off. Also saw an euphoric Michael Gira as high on life as he could be, dancing and cheering by the stage like a teenager, yelling “Louder!!” every 5 minutes. I couldn’t believe it, it was so awesome. […]

(We Are) The Roadburn Crew (by Invisible Oranges)

Posted on Monday, May 9th, 2011

Roadburn 2011 ended a little over three weeks ago, yet I am just now getting around to being able to write about it. Had I done so immediately following, the review would consisted of little more than all-caps and mindless babble. The enormity and awesomeness of the festival shocked me, […]

Roadburn Festival 2011, Tilburg, the Netherlands – Day One (by Noise Road)

Posted on Monday, May 9th, 2011

Where were you? Where were you when, in clear breach of the Geneva convention on sub-audible sonic warfare, Sunn O))) caused the mass bowel evacuation of Tilburg? Where were you when Circle and then the Master Musicians of Bukkake tripped our collective [email protected]? Godflesh performed the industrial masterpiece, Streetcleaner, for […]

Roadburn 2011, Tilburg, The Netherlands – Day 3 & Afterburner (by The Sleeping Shaman)

Posted on Friday, May 6th, 2011

..and so, as with all good things, Roadburn has to come to an end. One final day of the festival itself, and one ‘mopping-up-the-remains’ day, ‘Afterburner’. Feeling the after-effects of the night before, namely suffering from one massive Voivod-induced bangover, I steered my sorry carcass into the Midi to watch […]
