Album of the day: International Hello – S/T (LP)
Posted on Saturday, July 24th, 2010
Praise for International Hello‘s S/T from Still Single: The members of Monoshock, a monstrous Bay Area acid-psych A-bomb that detonated in the ‘90s, reconvene under a name they used as a song title. This isn’t reunion as much as it is reorganization. Comets on Fire expanded upon nearly all of Monoshock’s themes anyway, and it’s refreshing to hear that the members of a powerful band won’t rest on their laurels in the decades to follow.
The opening behemoth ‘Arise Superslide’ announces their departure in familiar form, by blasting the paint and Sonex off the studio walls. It’s a formidable smear of heavy motor-psych blasting, but there’s not enough room for complacency, voices jumping in and out of the fray, as crushing rhythms shift around, bass surges up and down, and an overactive synths catfights the guitar.

The Quietus: In Conversation with Moon Duo’s Ripley Johnson
Posted on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010
The Quietus’ Ben Graham talks to Ripley Johnson about Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips and the three R’s. “Are you really in Bermuda?” Ripley Johnson‘s soft Californian accent asks me down the line. It’s easy to imagine Johnson – main man behind Wooden Shjips, leading lights of the current garage-psych, neo-kraut, ...read more

Praise for Sylvester Anfang II‘s Commune Cassetten from San Francisco’s aQuarius Records: Latest collection of gorgeous drugged out free folk rituals from these Belgian freaks, and as always, it’s a fantastically weird and tranced out affair.
