Album of the day: War Injun – Tribal Eulogy

Lovingly pinched from Hellride Music: WHOOOOWHEEE!! Gawd bless the soil that bears the fruit of the Maryland Doom scene. Through its loins is birthed War Injun, a ferocious addition to a hallowed family that includes Pentagram, The Obsessed, Earthride and Spirit Caravan among many other notables. If ‘Loaded and Damned’, the first track off of War Injun’s debut full length Tribal Eulogy doesn’t move your blood and shake the front door off your hinges, I’m at a loss to guess what will.

True to it’s roots, War Injun features a cadre of Maryland scene locals. Kyle Van Steinburg (Earthride) and Kenny Staubs (Outside Truth) make up the guitar pairing, JD Williams formerly of the late, great Internal Void is on vocals, Dave Morgan (Beyond Fatal, Leviathan AD) on bass and the heavy hands of JB Matson (Outside Truth) on drums. The record was mixed and produced by Bruce Falkinburg (The Hidden Hand) and final mastering courtesy of DC Doom’s ubiquitous and essential knob-twiddler, Chris Kozlowski. Just on paper, the people involved in the making of Tribal Eulogy is by itself, a testament to the talent within that scene. If you think that’s impressive, wait ‘til you get a load of the actual record.

Fifteen seconds into ‘Loaded and Damned’, just after JD (Ah, it’s so great to hear JD’s voice again!) hollers the title of the song, the band lays into a percussion-driven groove that has to register on the Richter scale. That thing is so friggin’ heavy, it comes from the toes. From that point until the end of the record I became instantly aware that I was to bear witness to something special. There’s a combustible mix of power and passion here that doesn’t come around that often. These are people dedicated to making sure their music blows your moccasins clean off your feet.
