Self-hating riff worshippers rejoice! EYEHATEGOD, the legendary Southern hardcore-blues-sludge-and-doom group from Katrina-ravaged New Orleans has been confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2010. With its hateful, hopeless, anguished vocals set against extra-slow Iommi-inspired riffing, EYEHATEGOD are credited with founding sludge-core, one of the most vital new genres of metal to emerge from the 1990’s.
Countless bands have followed their footsteps, and after almost 20 years of creating some of the most corrosive, vile
music known to man, EYEHATEGOD still hasn’t lost the piss and vinegar, propaganda, and despair that fueled them back in 1998.

United under a war banner of negativity, and set to blast the system with a hardcore punk twist to the N’awlins sound of rebellion and pollution, Outlaw Order (also known as OO%)  is comprised of several members of Nola conspiracists Eyehategod, Soilent Green and Hawgjaw. Outlaw Order is very sonically similar to Eyehategod, and their debut full-length, Draggin Down The Enforcer, has definitely captured the sludgy vibe of the dirty south, fused with a fucked-up, punk sensibility.

Former Swans chanteuse Jarboe has aligned herself with the constantly mutating world of Avant-Metal by her recent collaborations with Neurosis, Cobalt and Jesu. She has also forged her own path with her feminine take on NYC dirge. Heavy, operatic and hypnotic, Jarboe’s hydra-head vocals vary from waif whispers to shrieking litanies, offering sonic violence and succor at the very same time.

We took this conversation on vinyl in the digital age to numerous bands, who a good number of these bands have merch tables that are a sea of assorted vinyl, and the sale of those vinyl albums are what help keep them on the road -since apologizing for downloading a record doesn’t put gas in a van. We asked these bands (Isis, EyeHateGod, Melvins, Boris, Zoroaster among others) what’s so timeless, so cherished, about vinyl, as well as what their favorite LPs are.

Why do you feel vinyl sales are continuing to grow while CD sales diminish?

Larry Herweg: “CDs are a dying format just like the cassette was a few years ago. Digital downloading and iTunes have taken the place of CDs. Vinyl just seems like it’s here to stay. A lot of people thought vinyl wasn’t being made anymore just because you couldn’t get it at shops like Best Buy.
I believe there might of been a dip in vinyl sales at one point when CD sales were at the highest, years ago. But most labels kept making vinyl in smaller runs for the die-hards and collectors. I also think with the help of Ebay, vinyl demand came back strong. On Ebay people are paying good money for these limited LPs, so I think people have realized vinyl retains it value more than CDs and is a better investment.”

Outlaw Order - Dragging Down The Enforcer

Lovingly pinched from About.com:Heavy metal: It’s been eight years since Eyehategod’s last full-length studio CD, but 4/5 of the group is in Outlaw Order. Jimmy Bower is the only EHG member not in Outlaw Order. Bassist Gary Mader steps in on guitar, and Justin Grisoli played bass on Dragging Down The Enforcer, though Pat Bruders (Crowbar) was recently announced as the permanent bassist. After releasing an EP back in 2003, this is Outlaw Order’s debut full-length.

Outlaw Order (also known as OO%) is very sonically similar to Eyehategod, and Dragging Down The Enforcer is heavy and sludgy. Thick downtuned riffs and thunderous drums propel the songs as they slowly obliterate everything in their path.

In a March 2009 interview with StonerRock.com, Khan stated about the documentary, “It’s going to be footage of bands and interviews. Everyone’s being asked the same types of questions, real general, open-ended stuff about what it’s like growing up in the South and their experiences.”

New Orleans’ Eyehategod have spent the last two decades at odds with a corrupt music industry, using their music as a proverbial middle finger aimed at everything from government officials to sanctimonious shitheads hiding behind organized religion.

They have defied all odds and continue to exist and persist despite personal and professional setbacks, from drug addiction to natural disasters. Here’s what Roadburn’s Drew Webster had to say about Eyehategod’s Confederacy of Ruined Lives in 2000: Lovers of self hatred and bludgeoning riffs rejoice! Eyehategod are back for real this time. Sure, they released Southern Discomfort not long ago, but that didn’t have any new material on it.  Confederacy of Ruined Lives is the first new EHG release since Dopesick in 1996.

For a long time, it looked as though drug addiction had taken its toll and ruined the band. They left a legacy of two classic records  In The Name of Suffering and Take As Needed For Pain and the slightly less great Dopesick. Among their accomplishments, EHG are credited with being the founders of sludge core. With its hateful, bleak, anguished vocals set against extra-slow sabbath inspired riffing, sludge was one of the most vital new genres of metal to emerge from the 1990’s.

Thanks to bands like Grief, Corrupted, Buzz-oven, Sour Vein, Bongzilla, Weedeater, Floor, Negative Reaction and now Eyehategod again, sludge seems poised to have even more impact in the 2000’s.
Charging straight out of the grave, Confederacy of Ruined Lives shows no signs of rigor mortis. Quite the opposite actually. It is still the same classic Eyehategod sound but now it’s a little faster, a little punchier, a little better.

The depth of the riff writing is the best of any Eyehategod release yet. Subtle twists and colorations unveil themselves with each passing listen. The production is a little brighter and cleaner, which makes the overall sound even more intense. The poorer production quality of  In The Name of Suffering went really well with the general sound and feeling of the music (it is sludge, after all), but progress sometimes has it’s price.

Musically, Confederacy… is superior to their other releases, so that’s the trade off. Standout tracks include the lurching stop time stutter of ‘Inferior and Full of Anxiety’, the punishing unison riffing of ‘Self Medication Blues’ and the hate and feedback fest ‘.001%.’ EHG even strays toward High on Fire territory on the relentless ‘The Concussion Machine Process.’

Summation: classic Eyehategod. No, make that slightly better than classic Eyehategod. Welcome back, we’ve missed you.
