Aniruddh “Andrew” Bansal of Metal Assault recently conducted an interview with vocalist / bassist Mike Dean of the reunited “Animosity”-era lineup of Corrosion of Conformity. An excerpt from the chat folows below.

Metal Assault: A new C.O.C. album is supposed to be in the works. A lot of people must be wondering what’s happening with that.

Mike: We actually have five new songs put together enough to perform now and the rest of it is kind of a work in progress. But creatively speaking, I think we’re in a process where we’re cranking out the music in a natural way and it’s coming together. So I think in another couple of months we should be ready to record in earnest. I’m not sure if we’re going to keep recording ourselves up there at the farm or we’ll go to a fancier facility. I think we have our current take on our classic style in mind. We’re definitely expanding on our past identity but we kind of have some new stuff to offer. So I’m excited about it. I want it to come together quickly without over-thinking it.

Metal Assault: So can we expect more tour dates once the album is recorded and you hit the road proper to promote it?

Mike: Yeah, that’s the plan, to do that and also do a full-length Righteous Fool recording [featuring Dean and C.O.C. drummer Reed Mullin] and keep touring together. Also there is some talk of doing some shows with Pepper Keenan, C.O.C. guitarist/vocalist and a member of Down] in the “Deliverance” lineup format. That’s sort of how this whole thing started.
We had some invitations to play High Voltage festival and perhaps do some dates in U.K. and Europe, and then it turned out Pepper was busy with Down. So we found out we couldn’t do that but the fire had kind of been lit under us and we wanted to go out and play. There were some good opportunities. I made the suggestion in just, kind of jokingly, saying that I wish we could play some three-piece shows. Nobody laughed and everybody was really quiet (laughs).

Metal Assault: I read that you were open to the idea of even recording an album with Pepper. How much truth there is to that?

Mike: Well, the truth in that is we want to do a three-piece full-length recording and we’re going to do it. But I think our next move after supporting that a little bit, will be to look toward changing it up again and depending on the schedule of Down and Pepper, doing something with him because I think people would be excited to hear that. I thought that “In The Arms Of God”, the last recording that we did with him, was really amazing. I thought he had some good ideas and really enjoyed doing it.
We didn’t tour enough on it, partially because of Down’s schedule and partially because our record company was in the process of going under, also the Hurricane Katrina striking at that time. It was bad for Pepper as he had to cancel some dates to get back to normal and all that. So we came out with a really good release but never got a chance to support it. Just the idea of expanding on what we were doing in “In The Arms Of God” and then bringing Reed back in to play drums, for me that would be really exciting.

Newly signed to eOne Music, sludge metal legends Crowbar will re-release three influential records, Crowbar, Live +1 and Time heals Nothing on October 5th, 2010. These three records are the band’s core titles and have influenced many of today’s major metal acts including Lamb of God and Hatebreed. With each title originally being released in the early nineties, this will be the first time all three records will be widely available in stores. A new Crowbar record is planned for early 2011.

Kirk Windstein formed Crowbar in 1991. Since that time, the band’s sound has profoundly influenced a new generation of metal acts the world over. Weinstein is also a key member of Kingdom of Sorrow (with Hatebreed front man Jamey Jasta) and Down.

Vocalist / guitarist Kirk Windstein, also of Down, told Noisecreep, “Much of the album is written, and I’ve been doing stuff with Down. But officially, I’;m fixing to head to Europe for 25 days and play festivals, and Crowbar is scheduled to go into the studio in July 16 to start tracking drums. We’re going to knock it out as quickly as possible. We have the pieces. They just need to be arranged.”

Windstein said he is hoping and praying to get the album out by November of this year. “I know it’s close to Christmas, when all the superstar acts release their albums, but it doesn’t make a damn difference in the music industry anymore,” he said.

JJ Koczan of The Obelisk recently conducted an interview with Eyehategod‘s Jimmy Bower about recording a new album, touring, roadburn and more. A few excerpts from the chat follow below:

The Obelisk: How was Roadburn for you guys?

JB: Amazing. Amazing. We played the same day Goatsnake headlined, and we’re walking around, and as a band we met Tom G. Warrior from Celtic Frost, and took a picture with him. He was like, “Dude, I respect you guys’ music,” and we were like, “What? Dude, you’re the man!” That was really cool. Got to see a lot of good friends. Missed a lot of friends because of the volcano, but also got the opportunity to come back and play the Afterburner thing, which we played over two hours. Was really cool. I guess if you’re a fan of any band and they play for over two hours, what a good night.

The Obelisk: That was a hell of a set at the Afterburner.

JB: It was just fun. Walter was like, “Thank you, have a good time. What do y’all need? Just go up there. How long are you gonna play?” And we were like, “Dude, we’ll play as long as you want us to play,” and he was like, “Cool.” It was a really relaxed environment. I remember Gary broke a bass string and they did Fuckmouth (laughs). Fuckmouth don’t show up much. Very underground. I barely even know about it (laughs). But no, that was probably the highlight show of the tour. That and London. London was amazing. All the shows were amazing, but those two stick out.

The Obelisk: Do you guys have anything planned for recording?

JB: We want to be done with the record by September. Try and have it recorded and everything. We’ve been slopping some ideas around. We’re thinking about doing a double record thing, where one record’s an Eyehategod like you would expect and the next record would be more experimental-type stuff that we’ve always wanted to do. Just trying to get all that together within time. You have to set a deadline for yourself or you’ll never get anything done – that’s what we find.

We’re saying by the end of September this thing should be recorded and everything. I think putting that deadline and doing this these shows together and everything has brought us all back together as a group, which is important to me, being able to write around the band, talk about ideas, listen to music together. It gets everybody on the same page. Like you said, it has been 10 years. Obviously, we’re better musicians now, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we have to write math rock. We know what works in this band, and that’s what we’ve been trying to write, stuff like that. It’s been more of a challenge than we thought it would be.

New Orleans’ Eyehategod have spent the last two decades at odds with a corrupt music industry, using their music as a proverbial middle finger aimed at everything from government officials to sanctimonious shitheads hiding behind organized religion.

They have defied all odds and continue to exist and persist despite personal and professional setbacks, from drug addiction to natural disasters. In the midst of all this turmoil, Eyehategod have become the high water mark when it comes to “sludge metal”, having birthed rock’s unholy bastard feasting on the teat that Black Sabbath and Black Flag built.

Guitarist / vocalist Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Down, Kingdom of Sorrow) has issued the following update:

“Got a good bit of good news to announce. Crowbar will be re-releasing the majority of the back catalog through Housecore Records (Down /ex-Pantera singer Philip Anselmo’s record label). These releases will be the ONLY official re-releases that myself and the band have agreed to.

“There are countless unauthorized re-releases out there. These were never OK’ed by me and are basically screwing the band. Most of these will be released on vinyl for the first time. We will also be putting out a limited-edition box set as well as a new live record and a CD of new material.”
