The Roadburn Guide to Hole in the Sky 2010, August 24 – 28, Bergen, Norway
Posted on Thursday, August 19th, 2010
We are ready to immerse ourselves in the best that this year’s Hole in The Sky Festival, set for August 24 – 28, Bergen, Norway, has to offer. What about you?
URFAUST- Wednesday, August 25th (20:00)
Urfaust is an aural vessel of occult madness, adding touches of avant-garde and ambient to their black metal induced rituals, which sets them apart from their peers.
GRAVE MIASMA- Wednesday, August 25th (20:55)
Spearheading a New Wave of British Death Metal, Grave Miasma, formerly known as Goat Molestor, are definitely the most morbid of the bunch. Their Exalted Emanation EP gained them a fierce cult reputation, and the band’s sludgy and downtuned DM will bring nothing but total devastation to Hole in the Sky. We’re ready.
ASTROSONIQ - Thursday, August 26th (20:00)
Pairing elephantine riffs with orgone accumulators, space funk and even avant-metal, Holland’s Astrosoniq have carved a niche of their own. Riding out on some deliciously nasty grooves, Astrosoniq offer some of the best post-psyche power trips around.
ANGEL WITCH – Thursday, August 26th (23:00)
Casting their spell again, Angel Witch’s nostalgia trip is a very good one, harkening back to simpler times when NWOBHM was a musical force driven by sheer enthusiasm for the cause and not some overused label. Plus, who can resist an old-fashioned crowd sing-along? Go on, it’s good for you. Wait ‘til the chorus of Angel Witch kicks in: You’re an angel witch, Yoooooou’re an ANGEL WITCH!
SOLSTAFIR – Friday, August 27th (18:55)
Originally a Black / Viking Metal type of band, Iceland’s Sólstafir evolved to combine the best of psychedelica, doom and postrock into an epic sound of their own. The release of Köld catapulted the band into the spotlight of metal connoisseurs the world over.
THE DEVIL’S BLOOD – Friday, August 27th (20:00)
Listening to the fantastic occult horror rock sounds of Holland’s very own The Devil’s Blood makes you realize that the psychedelic era (i.e. the late 60s / early 70s) was as much about Roky Erikson, Anthony LaVey and The Manson Family as it was about free love, mind-altering substances and flipped out hippies.
CATHEDRAL – Friday, August 27th (22:45)
Celebrating their 20th anniversary, doom stalwarts Cathedral have never sounded better than on their latest album, The Guessing Game, which could easily be mistaken for a long-lost, progressive rock gem from the early 70s. Released on the Vertigo (Swirl) label, of course!
VENOM – Friday, August 27th (00:45)
Bergen, Norway: Welcome to Hell. In League With Satan. Buried Alive. Black Metal.
Even without Mantas and Abbadon in the band, Cronos’ Venom delivers all of the band’s stone(d) cold iconic songs with power and conviction. This is classic rock, Hole in the Sky style!
TRIPTYKON – Saturday, August 28th (20:00)
Tom Gabriel Warrior’s triumphant return. Picking up where Celtic Frost’s Monotheist left off, Triptykon‘s debut Eparistera Daimones is a bleak, deeply personal affair, and easily the best metal album of the year.
AUTOPSY – Saturday, August 28th (00:55)
One of the most revered bands in the entire history of death metal, the recently resurrected Autopsy will play their first ever gig in Norway. This is the perfect opportunity to witness death metal as it was meant to be: downtuned doomy riffs paired with stomach-churning lyrics.
