Candlemass To Play Ancients Dreams In Its Entirety at Mikael Åkerfeldt’s 2014 Curated Roadburn Event
We’re beyond excited to announce that Swedish doom metal legends Candlemass will perform Ancients Dreams in its entirety at Mikael Åkerfeldt’s 2014 curated Roadburn event on Friday, April 11th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.
“Wow, just wow!”, says Mikael Åkerfeldt, “I am friends with the entire band, and especially boss / bassplayer Leif Edling. He is just a text message away and we meet up frequently to talk music and eat spicy food. Under the influence of… beer. And fine Italian wine. When Opeth started, myself and founder David Isberg agreed that our sounds should be a mix of Mercyful Fate, Bathory, Mefisto and Candlemass.
It’s such an amazing honour for me to share stage with one of my primal influences since the dawn of Opeth. Leif has always had a chip on his shoulder when it comes to their timeless masterpiece; ‘Ancient Dreams’. I don’t know what it is, since I’ve always held that record in such high regard. At Roadburn we’ll get a rare chance to witness it performed in its entirety. Maybe Leif has changed his mind, I don’t know, but I won’t f*cking complain though, that’s for sure.”
“It will be a total joy to perform Ancient Dreams at Roadburn!”, says Leif Edling, “It’s a classic record that has been a bit overlooked through the years, and quite truthfully, I haven’t been in total love with it since the production doesn’t reach “Nightfall” standards. But nevertheless, the music is good. Songs like ‘Mirror Mirror’, ‘Darkness in Paradise’, ‘Bearer of Pain’ and the title track are really cool pieces that we’ll love to play once again. Leif Edling’s Avatarium To Redefine Doom at The 2014 Roadburn Festival Afterburner
In collaboration with Roadburn‘s 2014 curator Mikael Åkerfeldt, we can’t wait to welcome Avatarium to the 2014 Roadburn Afterburner on Sunday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Mikael Åkerfeldt comments: “At another metal talk / wine session Leif once suggested we should write music together. I said ”of course”, not really aware that I had little time for anything apart from my current business. Leif is a workaholic and all of a sudden he texted me saying; ”I’ve got 2 songs ready! Come on!”
“I got somewhat stressed out and gradually it was understood between the both of us, that I would not be able to find the time to participate. However, Leif soldiered on, found an amazing line up, fronted by the charismatic genius vocalist-ess, Jennie-Ann Smith and has now released a 12” single as well as their debut album. Hearing some of the early demos made me go ”What the fuck?!” Wishing I’d shuffled my priorities around. It was/is so good. So fucking good! Is it doomy? Goddamn right it is! Avatarium got a sound that is both traditional metal and something ”new” that I can’t put my finger on what it is. I think it might be the elusive ”magic”! They’ve got it.”
“Roadburn 2014 will be the first time ever I do gigs with two different bands in the same weekend”, says Leif Edling, “But playing with Avatarium at the Roadburn Afterburner show will be exciting as it will be one of our first gigs outside Sweden, and a rendezvous with the international press and fans. I hope we can pull it off!
The album has received great reviews – it feels like I’m 20 and about to make my live debut again. What’s cool is that many of the songs from the first album are written for a live situation, specially arranged to grow and become something more than the recorded versions, and now we have the opportunity to play them as we thought they could be played… or fail completely doing it, hehe. Well, guess we’ll find out at Roadburn! Continue reading
Elephant9 with Reine Fiske To Bring Modern Rock ‘n’ Jazz Psychedelia To Mikael Åkerfeldt’s Curated Event
This Norwegian / Scandinavian bunch consists of well-seasoned jazz / rock / psych musicians who’ve musically gone ”all in” with this project”, says Mikael Åkerfeldt, “And with the addition of string-wizard Reine Fiske (Landberk, Morte Macabre, Paatos, Dungen etc) on guitars it’s certainly vouches for some ridiculously amazing music.
Elephant9 are quite a new fascination for me, since I generally don’t listen much to new music, but they blew me away! It’s moody music, often laced with sudden flurries of virtuosity, and with a rather strong musical connection to Scandinavian lore.If you want music by the book, this is not for you. If you desire otherworldy musical experiences and explosive dynamics however, your search is over.” Continue reading
Obliteration To Deliver Haunting Death Metal At Mikael Åkerfeldt’s Curated Event
“I’m far from a musical traditionalist except when we’re talking about a specific genre: Death metal”, says Mikael Åkerfeldt, “I want it to be to-the-core dirty and, in lack of a better word, groovy. This happy bunch does everything to fill the needs of a jaded and aging death metal fan like myself. Great drumming, vomit-like vocals and superb riffing.
I’m tempted to use the words ”old school”, but Obliteration are way bigger than some random retro band. They’ve drawn inspiration heavily from the late 80’s / early 90’s Scandinavian and North American scene. If you’re a fan of Autopsy and early Entombed with a topping of extra grit, you’ll not be disappointed.” Continue reading
Promise and the Monster To Bring Goth, Folk, Pop and Sinister Lynchean Vibes To Mikael Åkerfeldt’s Curated Event
“I was very much unaware of main woman Billie Lindahl when a friend and I went to see her play at a small venue south of Stockholm”, says Mikael Åkerfeldt, “She delivered an evocative set that I will never forget. On her own, with an acoustic guitar and an echo type pedal. I was floored. Sombre, emotive and simply beautiful. I can’t compare it to anything else.
I don’t want to use the word ”timeless” just yet, even if there’s a fair chance in 20 years’ time her sounds will be known as some of the ”traditional arrangements” of the 21st century. Promise and the Monster will perform as a trio at Roadburn which I’m rather sure will be the curveball addition to the Roadburn line up for 2014. Don’t miss it!” Continue reading
Swedish Hardrock / Progrock Legends Trettioåriga Kriget Confirmed For Mikael Åkerfeldt’s Curated Event
“While I was still living with my mum at 22 (don’t laugh) I acquired their second album LP ‘Krigsång’ on vinyl. Of course”, says Mikael Åkerfeldt, “My then mint condition vinyl copy is today barely playable. I must have spent 2 months straight playing this record in my headphones before going to bed.
Trettioåriga Kriget is simply one of the best hard rock / prog bands ever to come out of Sweden. Still very much active and still putting out amazing records to this day, they are as relevant as ever. Some of the nicest blokes ever too. I could rant for ages about this bunch, but I’ll put it plain and simple: If you don’t like this, you’re an asshole!” Continue reading
Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies To Bring Earth Air Spirit Fire Water To The 2014 Afterburner
Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies will play the 2014 Roadburn Festival Afterburner on Sunday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Selim and his motley crew of assorted enemies will take to the main stage for a special show.
Selim was scheduled to perform at the 2012 and 2013 editions of Roadburn, but fate had other ideas both times, with The Devil’s Blood disbanding just a couple of months before the 2013 festival took place. Now, Selim will be making his overdue appearance in Tilburg with his new band, Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies.
Selim comments: “I am very glad to be a part of this festival again. Walter has given me another chance to present my works to a broader audience and I am grateful. I have plans to put together quite the performance with many of my Enemies…”
As long time avid fans and admirers of Selim‘s musical endeavours, we at Roadburn HQ are extremely excited about the upcoming release of Earth Air Spirit Fire Water, the debut full length album from Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies. The album is the coming together of many minds and many ideas; four drummers, multiple vocalists, including the indomitable Farida Lemouchi, plus several other contributing instrumentalists.
