Thursday, April 15th

Main Stage

Featuring the original line up of Greg Anderson (Sunn 0))) / Guitars), Guy Pinhas (The Obsessed / Bass), Greg Rogers (The Obsessed / Drums) and Pete Stahl (Scream / Wool / earthlings? / Vocals) GOATSNAKE will headline the Thursday Roadburn date, April 15th, 2010.

Goatsnake

Goatsnake

With two classic-albums under their belt ( I, re-released on Southern Lord &  Flower of Disease), Goatsnake have forged a considerable niche in the heavy rock underground over the last decade with their signature Sunn guitar sound. Pete Stahl’s clean, soulful vocals have always been at the heart of Goatsnake’s low and slow bulldozer rock as well, setting them apart from their peers. Goatsnake‘s influence can still be heard and felt throughout the current stoner and doom scene, even after such a long hiatus.

ENSLAVED have been groundbreaking metal pioneers for almost 20 years. Since their Viking-metal inception, the band has been forging a connection between black metal and prog, arriving at an incredible melange of heavy psych and modern metal. Enslaved embodies the experimental, dark and psychedelic aspect of Roadburn, and we have invited them as our artists in residence – a premiere for Roadburn - for our 2010 festival. Enslaved, and various band members, will be doing several special shows during the festival.

Enslaved

Enslaved

Enslaved will be playing the Thursday Roadburn date, April 15th. Ivar Bjørnson comments: This show will pan towards the latter day Enslaved and will consist of a set list specially put together for Roadburn; emphasizing the heavy, the psychedelic and not but least – the visual aspect of what Enslaved is today. Be prepared for a surprise or two!”

Eyehategod

Eyehategod

Self-hating riff worshippers rejoice! EYEHATEGOD, the legendary Southern hardcore-blues-sludge-and-doom group from Katrina-ravaged New Orleans has been confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2010. With its hateful, hopeless, anguished vocals set against extra-slow Iommi-inspired riffing, EYEHATEGOD are credited with founding sludge-core, one of the most vital new genres of metal to emerge from the 1990’s.
Countless bands have followed their footsteps, and after almost 20 years of creating some of the most corrosive, vile music known to man, EYEHATEGOD still hasn’t lost the piss and vinegar, propaganda, and despair that fueled them back in 1998.

Even during their hiatus, YOB have maintained their position in the vanguard of contemporary doom because of the quality and originality of their mind bending doom-metal. Now they have returned and are prepared to reach even greater heights (and doom depths).

Yob

The band’s latest album, “The Great Cessation” is definitely YOB’s finest hour. Led by Mike Scheidt’s crushing doom riffage and relentless stomp, YOB have easily reclaimed their rightful cosmic doom throne while generating new fans and momentum.

Jarboe

Former Swans chanteuse JARBOE has aligned herself with the constantly mutating world of Avant-Metal by her recent collaborations with Neurosis, Cobalt and Jesu. She has also forged her own path with her feminine take on NYC dirge. Heavy, operatic and hypnotic, Jarboe’s hydra-head vocals vary from waif whispers to shrieking litanies, offering sonic violence and succor at the very same time.

Kylesa

Kylesa

Headed by the very capable duo of guitarists and vocalists Laura Pleasants and Phillip Cope, Savannah quintet KYLESA bursts out the gate with a roar, melding psychedelic sludge with catchy rhythms that do not let up until their captivating live show is over.

Midi Theatre

At their inception, Switserland’s MONKEY3 sounded somewhat deriviate of 35007’s aural soundscapes, but their sound has matured into something unique. The band has a deft ability to weave a myriad of sonic tapestries together, drawing from such diverse elements as potent metallic riffs, massive grooves and layers of exhilarating synthesizer effects.

Monkey3

Monkey3 create their own interpretation of kaleidoscopic acid rock with great zeal –drawing the listener deeper and deeper into their multi-faceted mindscapes, until it becomes a fairly daunting task to adequately describe their extended live jams. However, all you need to know is that Monkey3’s instrumental patterns will form, dissolve and swirl euphorically in your cerebellum, and definitely keep you oscillating between mellow chill-out and furious air-guitaring.

Sons of Otis

Formed in Toronto as Otis in 1992, Sons of Otis has followed Detroit-born guitarist Ken Baluke’s original vision to play thick sludge riffs underpinned by a pounding rhythm section and heavily reverbed vocals. The result is slow, spacey, hypnotic blues rock, seemingly too heavy to be real.

Earthless

For those who aren’t familiar with EARTHLESS, they are a powerhouse freakout trio from San Diego, playing long instrumental jams, structured at times, improvised at others. Their rock ‘n roll sound has loads of cosmic space-psych influences. Earthless is scheduled to perform at the Midi Theater.

Shining (NO)

Shining (NO)

Norway’s SHINING is indisputably one of the most hard-hitting and  progressive bands from that kingdom. They are constantly pushing musical boundaries, whether avant-garde metal, jazz, prog-rock or  psychedelia. The band excels at melding these disparate musical elements into a unique genre of their own, called Black-Jazz. Over the  top and sophisticated at the very same time, Shining (NO) create energetically original and thrilling music.

Russian Circles

Chicago’s RUSSIAN CIRCLES will be returning to Europe in support of their latest album Geneva, which has garnered praise from longtime fans and new converts alike. The band’s third LP combines a clean, riffs upfront approach with a blissful pulse and flow, wailing feedback and heart-pounding bass. Featuring borderline military precision, Russian Circles’ sophisticated yet warm take on postrock goes straight to the heart of the music, setting the band apart from many of their peers.

Green Room

Firebird - Bill Steer

Taking his passion for early Johnny Winter and classic rock and adding some obscure influences like 50’s harmonica-driven blues, Bill Steer’s FIREBIRD oozes the soulful hardrock sounds of the heavy 70’s.

Hailing from the dark reaches of France’s Basque Country, MONARCH! spawned from the blackened shores to celebrate the cult of all that is slow and low, delivering a 13bpm black mass of feedback drenched funeral doom/sludge, influenced by the likes of Burning Witch, Corrupted, Darkthrone and Noothgrush. Fronted by shreiking banshee vocalist Emilie “Eurogirl” Bresson, Shiran Kaidin (Year of No Light) on guitar, and MicHell Bidegain (Gasmask Terror) on bass, the band is now backed by the psychedelic caveman drumming of Robert MacManus (of Australian noise-doomers Grey Daturas).

Monarch!

Monarch! has released a number of albums on labels such as Crucial Blast / Throne Records / 20 Buck Spin / Heathen Skulls, and have shared split records with Grey Daturas and UK doom masters Moss. The band is currently preparing 2 new studio albums, as well as a split record with US black-metallers Wolves In The Throne Room, due to coincide with their joint Australia tour coming February 2010.

Mouth of The Architect

Mouth of The Architect

Hailing from Dayton, Ohio, MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT is exploring heavy metal’s more progressive, trance-inducing reaches bringing to mind bands such as Neurosis, Isis, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Bong

Sunn 0))) meets Sleep? Hawkwind jamming with Ravi Shankar? All that and more: meet BONG. Formed late 2005 within the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Heavy, repetative and psychedelic. Obsessed with the power of mantras. Extreme repetition. Ability to transport our minds to other places of thought; Cannot deficier the destination. Obtain influence from marijuana. Pure Thought is only obtained once your mind has left your body.

Troubled Horse

Hailing from Örebro, Sweden, TROUBLED HORSE is comprised of Witchcraft’s Ola Henriksson (Bass/Back-up vocals) and John Hoyles (Guitar/Back-up vocals) along with Jens Henriksson (Drums/Percussion) and Martin Heppich (Guitar/Vocals). The band sports a distinctive, sinister, 60’s sounding garage rock vibe, combined with a taste of 70’s psych-doom, creating music that evokes The Kinks, Pentagram and Roky Erickson.

Ancestors

Ancestors

There’s nothing common about the music of Los Angeles quintet ANCESTORS. To peg or try to pigeon hole the art they create would be missing the point. Ancestors weave an unorthodox mixture of sonic textures, down-tempo riffs and rhythms, accented with well-crafted melodies and at times full-throttle assaults. Their music is a journey through the past into the future; a signpost for a quickly emerging force of musical power and creativity.

Bat Cave

Samsara Blues Experiment

Utilizing both heavy riffage and psychedelic blues-jamming, Germany’s SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT offer 21th Century Krautrock that will appeal to doom and stoner fans alike. The band is causing quite a stir with their forthcoming debut full-length Long Distance Trip, and we’re very happy that these spaced out cosmonauts will be part of Roadburn Festival 2010, as we like to showcase such promising up-and-comers.

NIGHT HORSE exploded on to the Los Angeles rock scene in 2008, playing their first live show ever, while mixing their debut EP The Dark Wont Hide You for Tee Pee Records. Night Horse has caught the ears and eyes of critics and fans alike with their unique ability to blend the greater aspects of rock music with a much needed breath of contemporary fresh air. “If Sonic Youth had been immersed in an ocean of Allman Brothers inspiration, or Soundgarden had been steeped in late 60s Fleetwood Mac, then they might have turned out something like this. Night Horse take traditional blues-rock, spark it up with riotously noisy flashes and drag the rhythms through an early-90s grunge experience. Moreover, they’re cohesive, charismatic and compelling.”

Night Horse

Night Horse

Night Horse has hardly stood still in the last year. Gaining notoriety with a rollicking and visceral live show they have released 3 split singles since their debut, and show no signs of slowing down. Night Horse plans to enter to the studio with Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Isis, Pearl Jam) to record an EP and full length for Tee Pee Records to be released in early 2010.

Magnus Pelander

Magnus Pelander

We are very pleased to announce that Witchcraft vocalist MAGNUS PELANDER will perform some very personal songs on acoustic guitar that will be recorded sometime next year for a full-length record. According to Magnus, “the record will include a lot of different instrumentation but the whole idea is that the songs can be perfomed solo as well as with 4 or even more people.”

A two-headed minstrel eagle bearing a tentacle shroud, EAGLE TWIN is Gentry Densley (Iceburn, Ascend) and Tyler Smith (Form of Rocket, Hammergun).  Prophets and worshipers of myth and riff.  Densley suspends several octaves of pitch in the air at once with singular doom-tools of his own crafting: acrylic baritone guitars bastardized with bass strings and bull entrails, sinewed to an all-tube seawall of wattage.  His voice thick with rust and lichens.  Telling tales; telling the future.

Eagle Twin

Eagle Twin

Smith is himself the hammer, and orange lucite is his fearsome, resonant forge soon reduced to a shattered-hardware, splintered-stick, fist-smashed-drum nest of his own making night after night. Doom blues roots rock backing a new mythology of old testament proportions. Born of Crow, Eagle Twin growls, ‘I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.’ – Job 30:29

The Wounded Kings

UK Doom band THE WOUNDED KINGS, hailing from the legendary bleakness of Dartmoor, awakened by a tarot prophecy, merge Britain’s occult heritage with the fragile spirit of the human condition. They aim to produce a unique blend of spectral doom and psychedelic horror.
Originally a studio project they now crash onto the scene with a killer live unit to initiate the masses into a bottomless pit of suffocating heaviness. Original concepts derive from Edgar Allan Poe, Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost and obscure occult mysteries; they combine to create a greater understanding of otherworlds….

Øresund Space Collective

Øresund Space Collective

The ØRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE is a totally improvised space rock band from Copenhagen and southern Sweden. The membership is changing all the time and features members from Danish bands Gas Giant, SumoSun, Mantric Muse and Swedish bands The Carpet Knights, Sgt. Sunshine, Bland Bladen, Siena Root, and Drahk von Trip. The band are all about finding a groove and creating psychedelic space rock music within this framework. They always have at least two guitar players and two synthesizer players plus bass and drums.
