Saturday, April 17th

Main Stage

ENSLAVED / SHINING (NO) will be the main headliner of Roadburn Festival 2010, playing their 90 minute Armageddon Concerto on Saturday, April 17th.

Enslaved

Enslaved

Both Enslaved and Shining (NO) are indisputably two of Norway’s most hard-hitting and progressive bands, constantly pushing musical boundaries on their own. Now both bands will be joining forces again, and impress and shock Roadburn Festival 2010 with a rare performance of the Armageddon Concerto –for the first time ever outside of Scandinavia.

Shining (NO)

Shining (NO)

The Armageddon Concerto will lead Roadburn Festival 2010 on a journey from our present state to the inevitable downfall of this world — through Ragnarok and a following period of vacuum and nothingness, a brief and painful post-apocalyptic era; and finally through the rise from the ashes to a new beginning in a distant time and space.

John Garcia

John Garcia

Roadburn is beyond thrilled to announce JOHN GARCIA plays Kyuss at Roadburn Festival 2010.

As the legendary frontman of Kyuss, JOHN GARCIA really needs no further introduction, but here’s one anyway. The incredible emotional content of Kyuss is due in large part to the vocals of JOHN GARCIA. Deeply rooted in blues and baked solid by the searing desert sun, his powerful contributions to the classic Kyuss records Blues for the Red Sun, Kyuss (aka “Sky Valley”) and Circus  Leaves Town cast the mold for a legion of imitators.

Backed by a band of highly accomplished musicians, JOHN GARCIA will perform an entire set of Kyuss songs at Roadburn Festival 2010.

With Scott Kelly (Neurosis) and Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, The Hidden Hand and Wino) on guitar, Al Cisneros (OM, Sleep) on bass and Dale Crover (Melvins) on drums, SHRINEBUILDER’S self-titled debut full-length (released on Neurot Recordings) is perhaps the most anticipated “Roadburn Festival album” of the year. Over the past 10 months we have watched the Shrinebuilder buzz rise to fever pitch.

Shrinebuilder

We are truly looking forward to see Kelly, Wino, Cisneros and Crover meld their unique, different styles. When these four musicians get together, catchy canyon-size riffs lead to psychedelic guitar solos; subdued vocals add a mellow touch; and the meandering, groove-laden ambience ultimately creates crushing doom riffage. The sum of the parts is only strengthened by the natural vibe between these musical heavyweights – all of whom embody the true spirit of the Roadburn Festival.

Illinois-based extreme metallers NACHTMYSTIUM have been confirmed for the Saturday Roadburn date. This show will pan hard towards Nachtmystium’s more psychedelic inspired material taking Black Metal and the Roadburn attendees to a musical place that they’ve never gone before.

Nachtmystium

Nachtmystium

“We will be performing a unique-to-Roadburn set that will focus on our more psychedelic-inspired material, along with brand new material from our next full-length record “Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II”, says Blake Judd. “A guest appearance by Bruce Lamont of Yakuza (who played on our last full-length, “Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. I”) can be expected at Roadburn this year, along with some other surprises. We are very excited and honored to get the opportunity to be a part of this amazing festival.”

Roadburn 2010 - Candlemass

Candlemass

Celebrating their 25th Anniversary, Candlemass will play a very special, 2 hrs set on Saturday, April 17th. Opening at 16.00hrs, CANDLEMASS will perform their classic album, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” in its entirety with Johan Längquist on vocals. There will be a special part of the set that incorporates new singer Robert Lowe as well.

Midi Theatre

Jex Thoth

Jex Thoth

JEX THOTH, with siren Jex at the helm, play a distinctive kind of psychedelic doom that encompasses Black Widow, Pentagram, and Amon Duul II. Thriving on occultism and alchemy as well, they’ll take the Roadburn attendees on an extremely interesting doom-odyssey.

Even during their hiatus, YOB have maintained their position in the vanguard of contemporary doom because of the quality and originality of their mind bending doom-metal. Now they have returned and are prepared to reach even greater heights (and doom depths).

Yob

Yob

The band’s latest album, “The Great Cessation” is definitely YOB’s finest hour. Led by Mike Scheidt’s crushing doom riffage and relentless stomp, YOB have easily reclaimed their rightful cosmic doom throne while generating new fans and momentum.

Brant Bjork & The Bros

Brant Bjork & The Bros

Desert rock-pioneer and former Kyuss / Fu Manchu drummer BRANT BJORK is an underground legend in his own time. He shouldn’t need no further introduction.

If time is a toxin, then SONS OF OTIS must be positively venomous. After a decade since their last European tour, the Canadian heavyweights will return in a very big way, playing two different sets at Roadburn Festival 2010.

Sons of Otis

Sons of Otis

Formed in Toronto as Otis in 1992, Sons of Otis has followed Detroit-born guitarist Ken Baluke’s original vision to play thick sludge riffs underpinned by a pounding rhythm section and heavily reverbed vocals. The result is slow, spacey, hypnotic blues rock, seemingly too heavy to be real.

1999’s Templeball easily ranks among the best albums that Sons of Otis ever put out, and definitely qualifies as one of the very best stonerrock albums of all time, too. The band will play this mile (high) stone of a record in its entirety at Roadburn 2010, in addition to a regular show.

Majestic psychedelic prog rock by this American band on Rise Above Records. Believe it or not, San Diego’s ASTRA isn’t some obscure band from the early 70s finally getting their due, and The Weirding wasn’t excavated from any long-lost archives. Although it could arguably pass as a prized relic from another era, this cosmic album was released earlier this year. We at Roadburn are really looking forward to hosting the psychedelic-prog sounds of Astra.

Astra

Astra

Lee Dorrian comments: “Ladies and gentlemen Rise Above Records is delighted to present Astra to the billing of Roadburn 2010. Be prepared for something very special indeed from this amazingly talented classic influenced contemporary prog beast. Having witnessed them perform myself, I can guarantee that you are in for a treat. See you down the front.”

This is only one of two European performances from Astra in April,  the other being London on April 14th at the Scala.

Green Room

LOS NATAS, hailing from the land of the gauchos and the pampas, spent their early musical career trying to shed the label of being the “Argentinian Kyuss”. While they undoubtedly absorbed the musical spirit of Kyuss, they used it as a jumping-off point and turned it into their own style of well-crafted stoner rock. Over the last several years, the band have refined and expanded their sound to include prog and kraut rock as well as Argentinian music.

Los Natas

Los Natas

They now stand firmly in their own unique place in the musical spectrum, taking their listeners on grand journeys where beautifully intricate guitar parts swirl, entwine, tantalize and then finally give way to seriously heavy riffage. Los Natas is here to bring unadulterated stoner rock back to Roadburn.

For the past few years, YAKUZA has been receieving critical acclaim across the board from the likes of metal, jazz, and mainstream-music publications world-wide, ackowledging the band’s groundbreaking diversity.

Yakuza

Yakuza

Yakuza incorporates the sounds of heavy-metal, avant-jazz, and psyche-rock, creating a sound that rivals just about anything being recorded in the modern day heavy music scene.

The Gates of Slumber

The Gates of Slumber

THE GATES OF SLUMBER’s sound is a throwback to the old school doom laden sounds of the grandfathers of heavy metal, offering brooding yet gargantuan (doom) metal, epic tunes and sinister dirge-heavy work. A strong addition to Roadburn 2010!

We’ re gonna celebrate the 10th anniversary of MOSS. South Hampton, England’s Moss is is a three-piece (hammer) horror doom band that formed in 2000. Influenced by H.P. Lovecraft and the occult, songs usually average the 20 minute mark and incorporate dense and otherworldly atmosphere.

Moss (UK)

Moss (UK)

With Tombs of the Blind Drugged (released on Rise Above Records -instand cred!), Moss’ unique brand of extremity and terror now reaches new depths as monolithic riffs and gut wrenching vocals wreck and bludgeon but with an added sense for the melodic, and through the use of organ and mysterious chants atmospheres become ever more dense…

Fatso Jetson

Fatso Jetson

One of the most consistently adventurous and entertaining desert rock bands of the last 20 years, FATSO JETSON is as unpretentious as the California desert is wide. Instead of just going with the groove for the sake of grooving, Fatso Jetson expound on it in many different ways. Sometimes they go completely against the grain just to emphasize when they are in the pocket, while other times the flow is there but the heaviness of the instrumentation obscures it. This is true desert rock. You hear what makes Mario Lalli and Josh Homme tick, and wonder what on earth they put in the water out there in Palm Desert to grow such interesting guitarists and bands.

Black metal is experiencing a strong resurgence as of late, heralding bands which meld elements of their Scandinavian forefathers with more experimental concepts. A plethora of new bands with ambient, jazz, doom and blackened elements from across the metal spectrum have gained notoriety, pumping new life into a genre wrought with stereotypes.

Altar of Plagues

Altar of Plagues

Integrating the frantic production of Scandinavian black metal with the ambience of post metal is Ireland’s ALTAR OF PLAGUES, whose debut album White Tomb is a definitive statement regarding the abilities of the genre.

Bat Cave

Ahkmed

Ahkmed

Australia’s AHKMED, have taken Kyuss-infused space jams as a jumping  off point and melded them with the sonic experiments of Pink Floyd and Hawkwind to create a unique antipodean stoner / post rock hybrid.
Careful listening will also reveal a hint of Loop and Mogwai in their musical universe as they specialize in juxtaposing heavy riffs with  mellow soundscapes and layered effects, all stretched out over
gorgeously expansive songs.

Though TOTIMOSHI doesn’t quite run the full length of the schizo-grunge gamut established by such left-field progenitors as the Melvins (with whom they’ve toured), their blend of Latin shred, garage-y war beats is so seamlessly melded into a single coherent attack, that it forces you to swallow the entire pill all at once.

Totimoshi

Tony Aguilar’s near-pastoral vocal style blends with his gritty, bluesy fretwork. Totimoshi have finally and completely realized their full potential, settling into a groovily warped, peyote-soaked take on the kind of thunder blues and thud rock that defined the early ’70s and eventually gave way to grunge as we know it.

Horisont

Horisont

If you like the heavy 70s, you’ll certainly dig Sweden’s HORISONT. They excel at creating old school, bluesy hard rock, influenced by the likes of Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath and November. The fact that half of the lyrics are sung in Swedish and English adds to band’s appeal. Horisont’s debut album, Tva Sidor av Horisonten (Two Sides of Horisont) easily ranks among the very best stoner rock albums of 2009, and is sure to win over lots of new fans.

Roadburn 2010 will see the triumphant arrival of Dr Simon Von Strange, along with his cohorts Emily Pentangle and the nefarious Randolph T. Reaper; where they will unleash their dark twisted formula that is THE LAMP OF THOTH.

The lamp of Thoth

The Lamp of Thoth

Described by some as a seriously unbalanced, eccentric mix of NWOBHM and the Doom cults, The Lamp of Thoth will raise the spirits of dread eldritch horrors and enslave you to bang your head and worship in the name of Heavy Metal!

Black Math Horseman

LA’s BLACK MATH HORSEMAN live somewhere between the psychedelic world of 70’s stoner and contemporary shoegazers which they adorn with touches of goth and post rock to create their mind altering sound.
