"we need fuellll .....fuelll and passengerrrzzzzzzzzz"

U.S. space rock legends Farflung have released two new albums entitled "The Myth of Solid Ground" [comp.] and "When Science Fails". The "Myth..." album features some real headbangers, while "Science..." is more cerebral and experimental. Expect shrieking fuzz guitars, head-spinning G-force vortexes, fat bass heavily infused with acid-drenched cosmic roars and galactic mantra hypnotics. Farflung are galactic space pioneers, adrift in an uncharted myriad of kaleidescopic realities and dimensions. Farflung's Tommy Gernas rambles on to Roadburn about the band's fuel for flight: drifting on the headspace, tribal communications, sci fi and varied sources of music

Drifting on the headspace

A lot of things can shift into a suitable backdrop for a Farflung composition.
Many times an alka seltzer commercial can make as much sense as a Herzog movie. It's all where your head is at. I'll tell you where my head is at.... where a lot of what we learned about psych music went so wrong in the 70's. A great rift that spawned the brilliance of punk rock, and long overdue anti-establishment, fuck-the-commercially-dominated format that was to become the culture rapist of the 90's. Space Rock and true Stoner Drug Rock are the only bastions left untampered. Spacerock is for fans, whether you are a business man fucked off with his life or a stoner living and glomming off his mother, or a fan of life taking in all that points toward a shamanistic impulse to see meaning in 2001. We are in an age where its cool to be "fucking cool". Dudes slipping around in baseball caps and acting all tough and cool and git-down-to-the-MTV-mothership. Fuck 'em all. We come from the pollination of punk and post Thatcher/Reagan rape. Brilliance of musical anguish quelled by sexism and commercialism. Spacerock stands untouched, untrendy, unfashionable, unmoved from its motivation. Give me your gang-bangin', bitch-ho, boy meets girl, oops-I-did-it-again, rock meets rockrap, party fuck-yaa shit -- and swiftly shove it up ya' ass. You can't get near space rock. It's all from the soul and boy they're trying and try they will. Fugazi has more respect than others in our neighborhood. Names could be named, but that would be slipping into their realm wouldn't it? We as a band couldn't care less about anything else but playing for people who want to hear. Thats the main, I mean the MAIN reason, why we do it.

Tribal Communications Music is from tribal communications, propulsed by hallucinogenic waves and influence. It's not a trade for barter amongst big wigs, it's the oldest form of communication. I believe you must break down all barriers of sound and do what the fuck you want to, to express your vision, whether it be in rock, electronica, or any form of music. Also, this melting pot of creativity will produce things that will even astound yourself. Anyone can make music. It's not for the elite.
Nik turner from Hawkwind once said to me, his biggest dream was for Hawkwind to be everyone who gets it. The band to be swallowed up in a big Hawkwind Tribe, everyone on the same frequency performing as one at the performance. What a concept. I guess it's why I love spacerock, that sort of thinking. That's where the spirit started, and that's where its going. To me that's why Nik is the most important figure [in Space Rock]. Total self-will to do whatever. Musically and with his life. Not giving a fuck about anything else but the experience itself. The science of fiction is to be obtained inside ones own head.
Recording with Farflung is always pretty unprepared, we meet, drink, smoke whatever, until someone picks up an instrument and then we see what happens as one by one people fall into the groove. It's been so entrancing, sometimes we forgot to turn on the recorder. We record ourselves now, 'cos all the good headspace and producers in town dwindled away. For the past 3 years we^(1)ve recorded here at the Antechamber, and I think we' ve done our best work here "The Belief Module" was a hazy lp. I can't really remember doing it. We recorded in an old storefront in the middle of nowhere, and it just happened. That's all I can say. It was our last big release. Mr. Gedge from Bad Acid, if you're out there, give me a call. We miss you, hope your cool, thanx for releasing the last lp. Yeah well, there you go, people like Dave [Gedge], people that make it matter, rocket fuel for the mothership, we need fuellll .....fuelll and passengerrrzzzzzzzzz

Hawkwind, Neu, Amon Duul 1 & 2, Loop, Sabbath, Fugazi, Public Image Ltd, Wire, Bruce Haak, Buffallo, Andromeda, Pretty Things["Sf Sorrow"], Syd Barret, Cluster, Harmonia, Brian Eno, Venom, Faust, Kraftwerk, Mc 5, The Stooges, Gang of Four ["Entertainment"] Gong, Steve Hillage, Main, Stockhausen, Sibelius, Eat Statik, Ozric Tentacles, Pierre Henry, Perry Kingsley, Mort Garson, Chrome, early Nektar, The Sex Pistols, Joy Division, Painteens, Rudimentary, Peni, Head of David, Godflesh, The United States of America, Crass, Conflict, The Red Crayola, early Fall, Bubble Puppy, 13th Floor Elevators... well it could go on.

Also great respect and hours of listening enjoyment from our friends we played and toured with in the U.S.:
Subarachnoid Space, Mason Melinda and Co., and Sonic Walls of Dark Space. Hopefully we'll play some shows with them in Europe earthlings?; label mates in my other project, Anubian Lights, Fred and Dave, talented, honest, psychrockers. Acid King; Lori and her tribe, crumbling walls with sub-frequency.
Sleep; miss the men who gave a backbone to the Nik Hawkwind US tour 95, destroying cities in their wake, supplyin the clouds of kickback.
Bardo Pond; dark dronelords from the plains. See to believe.
Cluster; gentlewaves of unerving beauty and wierd tension, dispisers of corprate new wave.

As this entry into the Roadburn starlog is somewhat of an entry for Farflung into Europe, we would like to thank all who support our music and thanks for listening to my incessant ramblings. Rather than an interview, I thought it would be nice to explain myself, and give Roadburn's readers an insight, into why I do what I do with this project called Farflung. We just got some news also that a booking company want to do a European tour, hopefully spring 2002. I hope to see you all there. I promise you fuel for flight
