MONKEY 3
"Once Upon A Time In The West: People often tell us that we play some kind of movie music !?! So here it is... Our version of Ennio Morricone's score for the famous Sergio Leone movie!"

Switzerland's isn't the most prolific hotbed of musical talent, but when it does produce a band, the results are pretty spectacular. Taking an experimental cue from Swiss legends, Celtic Frost, and Holland's very own 35007, Monkey 3 spin dense webs of sound, building simple riffs into crushing soundscapes. Their debut album was a stellar introduction to their strange psychedelic world and the new outing "39 Laps" is no less interesting... The album is released through Buzzville Records.

Words | Boris

"39 Laps" is the sophomore album by Monkey3, recorded between the 27th April and the 7th of May 2006. Instead of recording in a real studio, we chose to record with sound man Mario Krag, in a woodhouse in the Swiss mountains. "Tranquility, fresh air, sun, great views and best of all, no stress..."

39 Laps > On to the tracks...

Xub
This song is the begining of the album. The tune starts slowly and grows up to a big crescendo the end. On this one we focussed on the melody with the guitar/keyboard arrangement, backed with a strong bass and drum pulse.

Last Moulinao
Pretty different from what we've done before, there's an acoustic guitar here! This tune's roots are melodic patterns played on the guitar that build in intensity with the drums, which are played in a tribal way, to provide an unusual groove. Then the bass and the electric guitar become angry.

Driver
This was the last song we wrote before beginning the recording. It starts with a melodic bass line with drums and then grows up into a prog-rock fashion. We were looking for something more technical with different melodies that interact together. The tune turns out to be, at some point, pretty heavy and has a lot of dynamic elements to it.

Jack
Here's a tune we've already played live quiet often. In fact, we wrote it long before the new recording while we were touring the previous album. The idea for the track comes from Picasso [bass]. He had this very melodic theme played on the bass, and we just jammed along.

Je Et Bikkje
This track came from another jam session, it's the longest tune we've ever played! Walter [drums] wanted a long, hypnotic, spacey track, so we just jammed a groove and the idea was born there. Then Boris [guitar] brought in the heavy riff that divided the tune in two parts. The second part is just pure space trippin', the hypnotic yet growling groove to the soundscapes played by Mister M.

Pink Floyd - Live At Pompei
Trippy, experimental, strange, powerful, essential.

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Walter [drums], is a big fan of this one. It's the way the drums are played and sound, the different colors you find in the melodies and the overall dynamic of the album.

35007 - Liquid
This album tells a story.

AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
We always listen to this album on our tour bus. This is pure high voltage rock'n'roll, very exiting! We feel happy when we listen to it!

Kyuss - Blues For The Red Sun
We met and started the band because of this album!
