"Now deep in ocean sunk the lamp of light And drew behind the cloudy vale of night --Homer, The Iliad"

Æthenor is a trio of musicians residing in Geneva, New York and London respectively. Æthenor Last year they unveiled "Deep in Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light" [Vhf Recordings 2007]. The end result was a series of nocturnal improvisatory recordings in Geneva, Amsterdam, Berlin and Linz from 2003 to 2005. With the use of layered organic textures and source manipulation, Æthenor conjured a harrowing suite of astral soundscapes that defy any exoteric concept of space and time.

Æthenor will perform a show at Roadburn 2008 [by request of David Tibet, on Sunday, April 20th, 2008]. The line-up, as ephemeral as the music dictates, will be anchored by the trio of Daniel O'Sullivan, Vincent de Roguin and Stephen O'Malley, and they will be joined by some very special guests, including Ulver vocalist, Kristoffer Rygg [his first live appearance in over a decade].

Words | Daniel O'Sullivan

Musically, Æthenor summon the most somnolent examples of Bernard Parmegiani, Organum, Nurse with Wound, Klaus Schulze, Igor Wakhevitch, Coil, Iancu Dumitrescu and Charlemagne Palestine. Acousmatic drones ebb and flow into crackling and bubbling sonic clusters. Lulling piano motifs and lamenting chants shimmer into distant lunar horizons while oscillators spin and drove serenely into unchartered audial regions. Sometimes as calm as a silvery sea, so that every gentle cat's-paw and lapping wave is deafening. Sometimes as tempestuous as a fuming lava beach, spitting and popping at the surface.

The inherent incantational aspects of Æthenor are of course to be expected when looking at the previous output of its individual members. Except here, the bombast is contained and a much more delicate approach is employed. On “Deep in Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light” Æthenor unlocked a chamber of arcane and auroral sound that is as incandescent as it is magnetic… Like the moons ! pull.

The release of two new full-length studio albums is imminent. Both of these recordings were sourced from an overnight improvisation in an abandoned meat-locker in Geneva and with almost two years of rigorous post-production, audio treatments and contributions by David Tibet [C93], Kristoffer Rygg [Ulver], Alexander Tucker, and free-improvising percussion duo, Alex Babel and Nicolas Field, they are due to be released on Vhf recordings in Spring 2008.

To accompany the release of these albums, Æthenor will perform a select number of shows including an appearance at the Roadburn Festival [by request of David Tibet, on Sunday, April 20, 2008].
