BEARD OF STARS

Out Now:

Paul Chain [The Improviser] - "Cosmic Wind" [CD]
Chain released "Cosmic Wind" [the long awaited follow up to "Sign's of Space"] under the moniker Paul Chain 'The Improvisor', a name he's using for improvisations and live recordings.

With "Cosmic Wind" he has once again produced an endless [live and improvised] trip to the astral plains using electronic weirdness, outer space wizardry and spaced out guitars.
Cosmic Wind sounds like the soundtrack to a cosmic ride or a fucked up acid trip. On the whole it's very drugged out music for Hawk-fans [in fact, the album could be a long lost Hawkwind gem], acid freaks or dopefiends -rehab optional.

Hypnosis - "Apple 13" [CD]
Collaboration of Laurence O' Toole and Sun Dial's Gary Ramon, who didn't just play several instruments, but also took actual care of the artistic production. "Apple 13" takes the listener on a trip through warm, psychedelic sounds reminiscent of late 60's heavy psych delights. File next to Bangtwister, Sun Dial & The Heads.

BLACK BALLOON RECORDS

Out Now:

  • El Caco - "Solid Rest"
  • WE - "Lightyears Ahead"

CARGO/SWEET NOTHING

The Heads - "At Last"
Originally released as a limited edition on Rooster, The Heads hard to get rehearsal recordings can now be heard outside of the 160 lucky souls who found them the first time around. The Heads "At Last" is, more or less, their live set for Autumn 2002.

ELEKTROHASCH

Out Now:

Gas Giant - "Mana"
Gas Giant's latest effort, "Mana" is the culmination of all of the talent and potential that this Danish band has shown on albums like "Pleasant Journey in Heavy Tunes" and the split 12" with We, "Riding The Red Horse...."

Gas Giant's domain is still the the sky and all that lies beyond it; "Mana" takes the listener on aural journeys, and is made of songs that are as mind blowing as they are heavy and epic. Their music is beautifully balanced between 'well muscled riffs', sonic tapestry and catchy hooks.

The result of Gas Giant's astral excursions is pure space rock bliss and "Mana", puts the band on the modern space rock map as one of the supreme rulers.

HIGHBEAM MUSIC

New Releases on High Beam Music:

Log - "Log's Second Album"
They are back following the success of their debut album. The Canberra / Wollongong six piece unleash another blast of metal meets sludge meets blues meets punk meets anything else you'd like it to really. Unique and brutal, the way we all like it.

Timid Joe - "Harm's Way"
The band's debut is a four track gem that ingeniously condenses late 60’s / early 70’s psyched-out guitar landscapes into simple, catchy pop-song form. That’s not to say these songs lack power or attitude.
Traces of bands such as Core, Atomic Bitchwax, Fu Manchu, Flaming Sideburns and Mudhoney are evident in the riffs and sound. The guitar breaks provided by self-confessed pedal junkie, Matt Wicks are a turbulent tantrum of fuzz and phase.

Described by Beat Magazine as 'a strong current of desert meets cityscape' Timid Joe’s sound makes you imagine Swervedriver and Nebula jammimg with Motorhead.
Opening track "Fangdangler" is a fullsome rocker, a ZZ Top meets Nebula ditty. The blistering pop-rock song "Harm’s Way" follows. The third track, "The Nazz" is a stompy retro rant. The final track "Skinnys Mo" is based on a simple groove beneath a brew of phase and wah.

Traces of Nut - "Internal Racket"
Emerging from Wollongong, Traces Of Nut are a young four piece outfit who take on board influnces from outfits such as Jesus Lizard & Sonic Youth. The result is the debut EP of abbrasive indie rock sounds, capturing the live energy and dynamics of the band.

Coming soon:

El Sanchez - "If You Don't Like It... Split"
Produced by ARIA award winning engineer Jonathan Burnside [Melvins, Faith No More, Grinspoon] 'If you Don't Like It...Split!' is five tracks of spicy, mouth watering delights they like to call burrito rock. Mexicana, Low Riding, Cowbell Chiming, Fuzz, Groove!

This strictly limited-edition vinyl release will also contain the exclusive live studio track "So It Goes."

MARTYR MUSIC GROUP

Out now:

Penance - "SpiritualNatural"
It was somewhere in the pulse-racing breakdown of "Lost My Way" that it hit. Penance have created the two best albums in their career back-to-back with "SpiritualNatural" and 2001's "Alpha & Omega." Two doom-laden, groove-rich, choice-riff, lyrically prolific and musically diverse explorations into the damnable human condition...If a band gets one great album in their career, that's luck, hard work and talent. More than one, that's genius -hellridemusic.com

Out next:

Penance - "Parallel Corners"
"Parallel Corners" will be reissued this fall. The audio masters will remain as-is while the packaging and artwork are to be completely re-done.

Tentative planning has also begun for a Penance DVD which would [hypothetically] include live footage [past and present], interviews, behind the scenes footage, interviews and whatever mayhem we can fit on there. Although we do not have any concrete release date set, we are currently estimating Spring 2004

METEORCITY

Out now:

Blind Dog - "Captain Dog Rides Again"
The album's ten songs display a streamlined, focused sound that ranges from simmering and dense to explosive, recalling the early days of trash and the poloished death 'n' roll of later-era Entombed.

The Hidden Hand - "Divine Propaganda"
Coming soon:

Orquesta Del Desierto - "TBD"
Orquesta Del Desierto are currently working on their new album - with returning cast members Pete Stahl, Mario Lalli, Mike Riley, Country Mark Engel, and Dandy Brown. New additions this time are ex-Queens of The Stone Age drummer Gene Troutman and percussionist Pete Davidson.

The primary sessions for the recording are finished, with the remaining work to be done mid August. Says head-Orquestan Dandy Brown, "We managed to get 10 songs recorded, six of which have vocals already.
"There is some cleaning up to do, additions to make in the production studio in Palm Springs, but everything is extremely strong. The tones, the vibe, everything has come together this time around. We popped the top on the Jim Beam a few hours ago, and have been working on the final mixes."

"A few things to fix, add, and think about for production, but overall we've got a monster on our hands... and that ain't just the Beam talking!"
Orquesta del Desierto's new album will sweep like a warm canyon wind across the land before year's end -- From MeteorCity in North America, and The Stone Circle [Freebird Recs / Alone Recs] in Europe.

Spirit Caravan - "The Last Embrace"
Before The Hidden Hand, Wino was part of a band called Spirit Caravan. In addition to the "Dreamwheel" EP on MeteorCity, Spirit Caravan had two full-length albums on the Tolotta label and three limited edition 7" records ["Lost Sun Dance", recorded under the band name Shine, a Split 7" with Sixty Watt Shaman, and the self-titled Spirit Caravan 7" sold during their final tour].

Unfortunately, Tolotta is closing its doors, and with the exception of Dreamwheel and the band's contribution to the Rise 13 compilation ["The Departure"], all the Spirit Caravan material is out of print.

That's about to change. On November 4, MeteorCity is releasing "The Last Embrace", a collection of nearly all of the material from both the band’s albums, plus the songs from the out of print 7"s and the Rise 13 compilation, as well as three never-before-released songs for an enormous twenty-nine tracks on two CDs with an expanded CD booklet including the complete lyrics.

The Last Embrace is a band-selected collection of the best music from their all-too-short career, and serves as Spirit Caravan's final audio document.

MOLTEN RECORDS

Out now:

On Trial - "Blinded By The Sun"
After a gap of a couple of years here is the stunning 2002 album by the best kept Scandinavian secret since Rumplestiltskin.
Sounding like a cross between Love and The Sound Track Of Our Lives the band blend an emotional west coast flavoured sound with powerful acid guitar and melodic sensibilities. Intricate arrangements and sweeping acid psych that’s both achingly ragged and beautifully realised. This album grows on you with every listen just like a classic album should.

PAINIAC RECORDS
[ painiac@pandora.be ]

Sloth - "When It Happens, You'll Know"

Beyond Belief - "Dawn" [Painiac Rec / Suicidal Doom Series Part VI]
Contains both [re-mastered] demo-recordings from 1991 and 1992. Sorrowful heavy apocalyptic doom metal with very deep grunts.
The sleeve has a great drawing, especially made for this release, and furthermore; there is black/white artwork and a huge inlaysheet with random info, picture-collage and a new interview.
Limited and handnumbered as always and there will be no CD version at all. More than 50 minutes of doom metal undergroundhistory.

RELAPSE RECORDS

Alchemist - "Austral Alien"
Heavy music wizards Alchemist concoct a diverse, progressive sonic palette with the undeniably unique "Austral Alien." Uniting the chief constituents of both heavy metal and rock with an avant-garde sense of progressiveness and a remarkably adventurous spirit, Alchemist have delivered a record that will appeal to metal fans across-the-board. Explosive, angular, powerful and enlightening, Alchemist's "Austral Alien" propels the listener across multiple musical boundaries.

Harvey Milk - "The Singles"
Too heavy to be post rock. Too weird to be metal. Too everything to be anything, Harvey Milk are unconventional and wholly unique, both structurally and sonically. Grand in its stubborn difficulty and epic in its difficult beauty, the sound of Harvey Milk is simultaneously ugly and beautiful. Legendary for their devastating live shows and their absolutely absurd heaviness, Harvey Milk crafted inconceivable slabs of mesmerizing, ultra dynamic sludge, as well as precious moments of effortless grace and restraint.

"The Singles" delivers all the retardedly hard to find moments of Harvey Milk's career and is at once hypnotic, repetitive, jarring, unpredictable, exhausting and perplexing. Harvey Milk is dead. Long live Harvey Milk.

RISE ABOVE RECORDS

Out now:

Sally - "C-Earth"
In early 2001 Sally started work on writing and got in contact with legendary doom producer Billy Anderson, who was more then eager to work on the project and in June 2002 the band entered New Rising Studios in Essex and bashed it out on 10.

The result is "C-Earth" an extremely heavy sludge beast of an album with a guitar sound thicker then a room full of Sun readers. Gone are the more 'stoner' moments that featured on "Sally", instead this is a record that fully reflects the Sally live experience. At times grim and droning, at times angry and aggressive, "C-Earth" is a violent ride.

Coming soon:

Grand Magus - "Monument"
Swedish behemoths Grand Magus have the uncanny knack of effortlessly fusing classic hard rock emotion, with the unashamed spirit of balls out heavy metal. This is achieved with a titanic groove and finesse, which is then ploughed deeply and gloriously into a sub nadir pit of bleakest doom.

The end result is a volcanic mutation of bombastic proportions, spewing out the words "true metal" with a contemporary fire that makes ash of all its bad hair-styled pretenders.

With classic songs writing skills and bulldozing riffs combined, Monument is indeed a monumental release for this Stockholm power doom trio. It will once again see the band head out on a world tour. "Monument" is released on Rise Above Records on 20th October 2003.

Unearthly Trance - "Season of Séance, Science of Silence"
Formed in the midst of millennium euphoria 2000, Unearthly Trance were certainly 'not' looking for the chance to play at your at your celebratory New Year party. In fact, Unearthly Trance’s mission was to create the most crucifix shaking sounds this side of the Apocalypse: Uneasy listening for the easy going!

The ebony cape shrouding the grimness of Seasons of Séance… can also be attributed, in part, to the frosty cold fingertips of underground legend, Stephen O’Malley (SUNN 0))), Burning Witch, Khanate & graphic designer to the bleakest of fiends, whose assistance in production murder has transformed these epic slabs of cold marble into the most suicidal anthems of violent emptiness.

The extremity of UT is unquestionable, and whilst originality maybe is questionable, to an extent, this is not your standard Doom or Stoner, or even drone affair. The mix of Black Metal influences with bleak, sick & persecuted sub crust marathon dirges must be heralded as pure nirvana for the blackest of Doom fans.
"Season of Séance, Science of Silence" is released by Rise Above Records 20th October 2003.

Look forward to new releases from Witchcraft and Orange Goblin on November 17.

TEEPEE RECORDS

We here at Tee Pee are honored to welcome the legendary Brian Jonestown Massacre to our roster. This renowned and enigmatic band will unveil "..And This is Our Music" sometime in October.

Next up on the release schedule is "Blinded by the Sun" from On Trial. Who is On Trial you might ask? On Trial is a band that can warp reality with an arsenal of vintage guitar pedals. Based in Denmark, the group's music is a natural outgrowth of the jam process and a love of effect driven sonics.

On Trial's song writing veers everywhere from short fuzz-fuelled freak-outs, acid-drenched space explorations and even pop-psych balladry as sincere as it is distorted. This is what headphones were made for. This baby is now!

Sleep's "Dope Smoker" is out now and wafting its way into headphones across the country at a fiery pace. The overwhelming response has been hydroponic.

TRANSDREAMER RECORDS/MEGAFORCE RECORDS

On September 9, Wellwater Conspiracy, featuring Matt Cameron and John McBain, will release its ultimate album of blistering music, entitled "Wellwater Conspiracy."
