Terrorizer: Roadburn Day 1
Posted on Tuesday, April 17th, 2012
After a solid albeit unspectacular opening set by LA’s The Icarus Line, festivities kick off in serious fashion on the Main Stage as current members of d.USK/Inverloch and former members of diSEMBOWELMENT perform ‘Transcending The Peripheral‘ in its entirety. You won’t hear a more simultaneously crushing and crystalline record, and it translates extraordinarily well in a live setting.
Horisont follow in the medium-capacity Green Room. And they provide a welcome energy to all of the bleary eyed overnight travellers. Focusing more on boogie rather than the blues of Graveyard, Horisont swings. And powerfully so.
It was off to the tiny Stage01 (formerly called the Batcave), which is packed to the gills with folks there to see demonic retro psych band Year Of The Goat, whose debut EP was one of 2011′s biggest revelations. They deliver an outstanding set, highlighted by a pair of new tracks, the epic ‘With The Voice Of A Dragon’ and ‘This Will Be Mine’, and ‘Of Darkness’, the first truly transcendent moment of the fest so far.

Terrorizer: Roadburn Day 2
Posted on Tuesday, April 17th, 2012
They did it. They friggin’ did it. Yes, somehow Nachtmystium manage to top their usual mindfucking live experience. With über-producer Sanford Parker in tow, it’s not just about the fact they choose to play their pivotal recording ‘Instinct: Decay’ in full, it’s how they manage to make it sound so ...read more

40 Watt Sun open the main stage at Roadburn’s final day (well, apart from tomorrow’s Afterburner) ensuring that if you don’t already feel miserable because of your hangover (or from Conny Ochs‘ aching cover of Townes Van Zandt ‘Waitin’ Around To Die’ just a moment before at the Het Patronaat), ...read more
The Obelisk: Roadburn 2012 Coverage – Afterburner
Posted on Tuesday, April 17th, 2012
Roadburn‘s annual Afterburner is a brilliant idea. Essentially, it’s a scaled-down version of the larger festival. Two stages instead of four, merch moves into the 013 proper, there are fewer tickets sold — and they’re sold separately from those of Roadburn‘s prior three days — and all in all, it’s ...read more
The Obelisk: Roadburn Coverage – Day Three
Posted on Tuesday, April 17th, 2012
When my alarm went off this afternoon, it was with both excitement and a touch of apprehension that I considered the prospect of what today would bring Roadburn 2012, Day Three. Saturday, April 14. I looked at my pocket schedule — no fancy printouts or cellphone PDFs for me — ...read more
The Obelisk: Roadburn 2012 Coverage – Day Two
Posted on Tuesday, April 17th, 2012
Today was going to be my calm day. Yesterday was a ton of running around, tomorrow indeed will also be a ton of running around. Today the idea was fewer bands, but more full sets. I wanted to let the fest sink in a little. To savor it for a ...read more
The Obelisk: Roadburn Coverage – Day One
Posted on Tuesday, April 17th, 2012
It was utter madness, but I suppose that’s to be expected. At this point, that’s part of what makes Roadburn the festival it is and has become. And on the day that 2012 kicked off and it was announced that Electric Wizard will curate 2013 and that Godflesh will play ...read more

‘When you see TV footage of the 1960s or early 70s, going to a meeting of a coven was almost like going to a book club or a knitting class because it was that commonplace,” suggests Lee Dorrian. He’s the frontman of doom metal legends Cathedral, and someone who also ...read more

I don’t know the exact date when the line-up for Roadburn 2011 went from ridiculous to outrageous, but one thing is certain: next year’s event will be the bomb. Having managed to skillfully dodge that damn volcano last year, the organizers seem to have been keen on making next year’s ...read more
