Album of the day: Riotgod – Riotgod
Posted on Thursday, November 25th, 2010
Lovingly pinched from Sea of Tranquility: Hailing from New Jersey, Riotgod exploded onto the hard rock scene with their 2010 self-titled debut. Taking one look at the lineup, it’s obvious that it’s one of the highlights of Riotgod, especially if you’re a fan of Monster Magnet’s rhythm section of Jim Baglino and Bob Pantella. Playing a heavy, riff-driven hard rock style, they are sure to please all fans of the genre. Although the debut leaves much to be desired in the songwriting department, I have to applaud the wonderful musicianship and professional production. Despite my few gripes you’ll read about ...read more
Sourvein and Coffins Join Roadburn Festival Afterburner
Posted on Wednesday, November 24th, 2010
Roadburn is very excited to report that Sourvein, along with Coffins, have been confirmed for Roadburn Festival Afterburner, set for Sunday, April 17th, 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland. Featuring former members of 13 and Buzzov’en in their ranks, Sourvein offers low-tuned, balls out, southern sludge metal. Word on the streets is that they have been slaying audiences across the US for the last couple of years with their heavy-as-fuck assault. Influenced by old school 80s and 90s doom and thrash, Japan’s Coffins death metal onslaught also shows some heavy and oppressive sludge metal tendencies keeping them somewhere near the doom category, ...read more
Album of the day: The Heads – Relaxing With The Heads (reissue)
Posted on Wednesday, November 24th, 2010
Lovingly pinched from Drowned In Sound: The reissue of Relaxing With The Heads, the debut album by Bristolian stoner-psych mong-o-lude monoliths The Heads, is long overdue. From the perspective of you, the would-be consumer of the pepperiest riff salad, this is because it’s been out of print for… well, Christ knows how long to be honest, but it was released in 1996 and its original label, the UK division of Headhunter Records, released basically nothing afterwards. From the perspective of the band themselves, it means that this mud-flapping sonic throb is no longer ‘of its time’ and can get appraisal ...read more

Dylan Carlson’s seminal drone / avant-Americana outfit Earth have completed their next studio album, entitled Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light 1. The follow-up to 2008’s The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull, and the recent A Bureaucratic Desire For Extra-Capsular Extraction reissue, it features another shake-up in the Earth line-up: joining Dylan Carlson and Adrienne Davies on the album is cellist Lori Goldston (Nirvana, David Byrne) and Karl Blau (K Records, Laura Veirs, Microphones) on electric bass. The touring band will feature Carlson, Davies, Goldston, and Angelina Baldoz on bass. The album is said to draw inspiration from ...read more
The self-titled magazine interview: Steve Von Till of Neurosis
Posted on Monday, November 22nd, 2010
Self-titled Magazine‘s Trevor de Brauw (of Pelican-fame) interviewed Steve Von Till of Neurosis for their 25th anniversary: Now that Neurosis is considered one of modern metal’s most influential acts (see: such vocal supporters / acolytes as ISIS, Mastodon and Converge), it’s easy to forget their hardcore / punk beginnings in the same Bay Area scene as Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine, and Blatz. In fact, Neurosis’ meditative approach to heavy music didn’t emerge until the quintet’s third album, Souls at Zero, a journey to the darkest fringes of psychedelia that incorporated an arsenal of keyboards, samples and complex arrangements. And then there ...read more
