On Friday, April 21, the Cul de Sac will serve as the very centre of our overloaded brains once more, as Amsterdam (NL)-based Jonkoklapper will gladly extend the 420 celebrations by offering a drugged-out sort of ritualistic doom-pop. Appealing to any dopesmoker making the pilgrimage to Roadburn, Jonkoklapper might be virtually unknown yet, but we’re pretty sure the band will heavily connect with our international community through their shamanic vibe, or dare we say…fumes. Hail the leaf!
Prior to their collaborative jam session with GNOD on the Saturday, Kuro, hailing from Bristol (UK) come to Cul de Sac to fuse dark chamber music with drone, psych and jazz motifs. Expect classic violinist Agathe Max and experimentalist Gareth Turner building harrowing soundscapes, juxtaposing organic strings with abrasive electronics, or elegance and beauty with avant-garde noise.
In addition to his performance on Thursday, Ritual Object will return to Cul de Sac, to provide material from A Field Guide to Psychic Warfare, which was created to have the opposite affect to his previous performance and will ideally undo any id-scars or void blisters from the previous evening’s entertainment. Using the wisdom of Manly P Hall and others, this performance relies on synthesized textures and speech samples to educate and inform.
In support of their long awaited sophomore full-length, Tempest, U.K.’s progressive post-metal troupe Telepathy will challenge their no-holds-barred approach to songwriting – by adding unorthodox song structures, the band’s cathartic tapestry of instru-metal is heavy yet melodic, and forward-thinking yet emotional.
Offering a secret passage to ancient civilizations, Zaum’s doomy yet psychedelic mantras thrive on bass and drums interwoven by mediative textures, and met with elements of sectional Mongolian throat singing. This Canadian duo’s captivating live presence is very true to their recordings, and with Eidolon being heralded as one of the best underground albums of 2016, we’re in line for such an addictive, hypnotizing, and mesmerizing trip through space and time.
Roadburn Festival 2017 will take place April 20-23 at the 013 venue, Tilburg, The Netherlands. Tickets are now on sale!
