Roadburn 2016 Official Exhibition: The World of Becky Cloonan

Posted on Wednesday, March 30th, 2016

It’s no secret that Roadburn has a strong leaning towards art and creativity, and we’re proud to announce that a new chapter in our ever-evolving love affair with music and art comes to fruition at this year’s festival.

For 2016, Becky Cloonan has created our incredible artwork, and with her comic book background, she provided a fresh edge to Roadburn‘s signature aesthetic. Her much acclaimed work proved to be so inspirational for this year’s festival that we have invited her to curate an official exhibition at the 013 venue, presenting a selection of her captivating comic book art work.

Cloonan‘s intricate linework, art-deco sensibilities and dark psychedelic edge make her the perfect match for Roadburn. Also on display will be selected works by her friends and peers, showcasing that Cloonan‘s world is aesthetically supremely compatible with Roadburn.

Besides her exhibition at 013, Cloonan has also been asked to bring her much acclaimed artwork to the city of Tilburg – with the gracious help of City Marketing Tilburg, Becky‘s fantastic art will be seen throughout the city on huge banners, making Tilburg a playground for some of the very best contemporary comic art.

Born in Pisa, Italy, in 1980 and first coming to prominence in 2003 through her art in Eisner nominated comic series Demo, written by fan-favourite Brian Wood, Cloonan‘s mix of clean, bold lines mixed with subtle intricacies, Manga-influenced angularity and artful use of chiaroscuro and colour quickly marked her very much out as an artist to pay serious attention to.

A run on DC / Vertigo‘s American Virgin, a series of well-received self-published one-shot comics – both written and drawn by Cloonan2011‘s Wolves, 2012‘s The Mire and 2013‘s Demeter and runs on Dark Horse comics’ Conan The Barbarian title and DC / Vertigo‘s brutal viking saga Northlanders, both written, again, by Brian Wood, lead in 2012 to Cloonan becoming the first female artist ever to draw the main Batman title.

In addition to her comic art, Cloonan – a serious music fan and metalhead – has long been providing art for t-shirts and gig posters for numerous punk, hardcore and metal bands, with her outstanding art for a number of t-shirts for The Sword in particular really standing out.

Roadburn Festival takes place between 14 – 17 April 2016 at the 013 venue, in Tilburg, The Netherlands.
