Album of the day: Autopsy – The Headless Ritual

Posted on Sunday, June 30th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Heavy Metal: Oakland’s Autopsy return with a new full-length The Headless Ritual, the second such album since they returned from a long hiatus. One of the true progenitors of gore laced death metal, Autopsy also inject a great deal of crushing doom into their assault as well as a certain snarl to the vocals delivered by drummer Chris Reifert, one of the genre’s founding fathers.

Autopsy - The Headless Ritual

2011’s Macabre Eternal largely saw Autopsy deliver their tried and true formula to the masses, a smart move in reestablishing their standing in everyone’s minds after their absence. The Headless Ritual sees the band branching out a bit more by adding a great deal more doom and weight to their delivery, as well as some rather interesting variation in the songwriting.

The doom-laden approach becomes apparent right out of the gate with the lead track ‘Slaughter At Beast House’,  which begins with a blasting assault but soon downshifts into pure doom with a glacial pace and a devastating riff. Strangely enough, and very unexpectedly, progressive elements make muted appearances further along with melodic solos from guitarists Danny Coralles and Eric Cutler that play off one another. Add a rollicking gait to many of the tracks, and Autopsy show their rock n’ roll roots.

Album of the day: Abysmal Grief – Feretri

Posted on Saturday, June 29th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Chronicles of Chaos: One of this reviewer’s all-time favourite bands has released another phenomenal album of high caliber horror-gothified doom metal only these Italians (and Italian bands in general) know how to create. Simply dubbed as Feretri (Italian for “Coffin” or “Casket”), this album bears the Abysmal […]

Album of the day: Rose Windows – The Sun Dogs

Posted on Friday, June 28th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Listen Before You Buy: Seattle’s Rose Windows formed in the way you imagine an altruistic, psych-rock band might; from friends coming over and playing music together. Guitarist Chris Cheveyo’s previous band hadn’t fulfilled his interest in exploring different genres and techniques so he started working on his […]

Album of the day: Master Musicians of Bukkake – Far West

Posted on Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Lovingly pinched  from Echoes And Dust: Like a portal to another dimension, Master Musicians of Bukkake have returned once again from dormancy. Two years isn’t really a long time, especially for a group so introverted and self-satisfying but after three years of annual full-length releases (the phenomenal Totem series), live […]

Album of the day: Hidden Masters – Of This And Other Worlds

Posted on Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Brandish: In case it has escaped your attention there is a bit of psych revival going on at the moment with thousands of bands from all across their world aping their 60s heroes in creating trippy, yet hook-filled soundscapes. A lot of those bands take the easy […]

Album of the day: Goatess – S/T

Posted on Tuesday, June 25th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from The Sleeping Shaman: I know what you’re thinking, I had exactly the same thought, “Oh fuck, another bloody ‘Goat’ band”, but stop right there, if I were to tell you that Goatess feature the vocal talents of one Christian ‘Chritus’ Lindersson, formerly of Count Raven, Saint Vitus […]

Album of the day: Spirits of the Dead – Rumours of a Presence

Posted on Monday, June 24th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Sea of Tranquility: Labeled as ‘Norway’s finest psychedelic stoner band’, Spirits of the Dead are set to unleash their third release Rumours of a Presence on The End Records. Following the critically acclaimed The Great God Pan, Rumours of a Presence also hits on many of the […]

Album of the day: Hot Lunch – S/T (Vinyl)

Posted on Sunday, June 23rd, 2013

Praise for Hot Luch‘s from San Francisco’s aQuarius Records: Hot Lunch? Hot damn! These badass San Francisco skate-rockers (we raved about their ‘Alakazam‘ 7″ single a while back if you recall) are back with their debut full-length, and it’s a punked up throwback ’60s / ’70s sounding hard rock doozy indeed […]

Album of the day: Locrian – Return to Annihilation

Posted on Saturday, June 22nd, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Angry Metal Guy: Have you ever wondered what happens to the music nobody listens to? It implodes. It does not even make any noise. It simply withers unnoticed, forgotten, unwanted. Then there is the music that stays: that particular strain of artistic endeavour that appeals to the […]

Album of the Day: Dark Buddha Rising – Dakhmandal

Posted on Friday, June 21st, 2013

Lovingly pinched from The Sludgelord: Dark Buddha Rising hail from Finland and play some pretty ambient, pretty occult, pretty psychedelic and pretty doom-laden drone. Theirs is a dense and transcendental sound, more like a voyage of discovery than a listening experience. Be fair warned though, this is not for the […]
