Album of the day: Valborg – Nekrodepression

Posted on Thursday, January 31st, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Last Rites: German (and Central European) metal has always contained a notable strain of off-kilter innovators. Sure, the careers of Destruction, Kreator, and Sodom have been staked on aggressive but mostly straightforward thrash, but one also must account for the not-quite-right-ness of Coroner (who are Swiss, but perhaps honorary Germans for the sake of this argument) or Mekong Delta. Even in some of the more recent development of German black metal, you’ve had the odd, stately turns of bands like Secrets of the Moon or Dark Fortress.

Valborg - Nekrodepression

In case the argument isn’t clear: Valborg falls directly in line with this tradition of strange, compelling German music, and Nekrodepression may just be the band’s most focused album to date.

Now, in any discussion of Valborg’s dark sort-of-doom, sort-of-goth, sort-of-death metal, the shadow that looms largest is Celtic Frost. Also not German, of course, but pretty close, both geographically and temperamentally, particularly when considering Tom Warrior & Co.’s recent third act. There are two key elements to Valborg’s music: the band’s general minimalist approach, and a gloominess that still feels tongue-in-cheek. (On that latter count, fans of Woods Of Ypres might feel a certain kinship.)

But more crucially, Valborg’s is a patient, measured aggression. That’s not to say that Nekrodepression is a frolic through the tulips: The one-two punch of ‘Under the Cross’ and ‘Massaker in St. Urstein’ hits harder than just about anything else in the band’s catalog, defying the listener not to crack a devilish grin.

Album of the day: Bloody Hammers – Bloody Hammers

Posted on Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Meatmeadmetal: We’ve covered / complained about certain sub-genres of metal swelling up to the point of gruesomeness and having to search extra hard to find the good bands because there are so effing many of them. We kind of said that last week when discussing grindcore and […]

Album of the day: Clamfight – I Versus The Glacier

Posted on Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from Metal Underground: Clamfight’s first album, Volume I, was a strong benchmark for their stoner metal prowess, and there is no chance of a sophomore dud with I Versus the Glacier.  Instead of spreading out the recording sessions over an extended time period, like the band members did […]

The Day After The Sabbath Vol 83: Midnight Garden (Switzerland) Posted Online

Posted on Monday, January 28th, 2013

The Day After The Sabbath is a blog specialising in regular compilations of obscure heavy 60s and 70s rock. It’s Rich’ aim to reveal the secret world of bands that were inspired by the early psychedelic, doom and hard rock greats but were too short-lived, un-commercial or just plain unlucky […]

Album of the day: Gozu – The Fury of a Patient Man

Posted on Monday, January 28th, 2013

Lovingly pinched from The Obelisk: When Boston rockers Gozu made their debut in 2010 with Locust Season, the album was greeted with no shortage of hyperbole within the heavy rock set. Their strong sense of songwriting, ballsy riffing, diversity of approach and penchant for melody made the four-piece an immediate […]

Praise for Boris / Joe Volk‘s Split  from San Francisco’s aQuarius Records: Japanese psychedelic heavies Boris return, this time sharing a split with UK psychfolkie (and former frontman for Crippled Black Phoenix) Joe Volk. Apparently born of a chance meeting at a festival, it’s a bit of a weird match […]

Praise for Ash Borer‘s Self Titled from San Francisco’s aQuarius Records: Originally released as a super limited cassette on Psychic Violence in 2011, then a little later, on Pesanta Urfolk as a limited LP, and now finally, this killer collection of avant, droned out, post rock flecked, West Coast black […]
