Album of the day: Pelican – Ataraxia/Taraxis

Posted on Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Lovingly pinched from CVLT Nation: Having been off the musical radar since 2009’s What We All Come To Need, Chicago’s Pelican burst back into hearts with the grace filled Ataraxia/Taraxis. This four track EP flits between massively weighty bass-heavy tones and sweet uplifting progressions, the instrumental four-piece delving into empty landscapes and hopeful desire.

Produced by Sanford Parker (currently playing with Minsk and Twilight amongst many others, as well as having a list of producing credits as long as your arm), Ataraxia/Taraxis is a sublime addition to what has been a fairly prolific career for a band formed only ten or so years ago.

Beginning the EP with the truly momentous ‘Ataraxia’, Bryan Herweg’s bass fuzzes in and out of space created by a lightly picked acoustic guitar line. A wall of feedback is thrown up gradually, little touches of electronic splendor echoing behind the deft guitar work of Trevor de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec.  It’s a tad unsettling at first, the strokes conjuring a truly wicked tone.
And then we are launched almost immediately into ‘Lathe Biosas’. Pelican create distinct sections – intriguingly heavy moments consumed with a huge bass sound, stabbing guitar strikes giving an angular feel to proceedings and Larry Herweg’s crashing cymbals filtering through the tides of aural pleasure.

Album of the day: Ufomammut – Oro Opus Primum

Posted on Friday, March 30th, 2012

Lovingly pinched from Doommantia: It seems like I am reviewing all the albums of the year all at once in the past week or so and here comes another; the new effort from Italian space-rock doomsters Ufomammut. Formed in Northern Italy in 1999, this is one band that has been […]

Album of the day: Ararat – II

Posted on Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Lovingly pinched from The Obelisk: In the two-plus years since Los Natas guitarist / vocalist Sergio Chotsourian made his debut with Ararat, a lot has changed. Long story short, Ararat has become a band and Los Natas – for all intents and purposes – has stopped being one. While the […]

Album of the day: Bong – Mana-Yood-Sushai

Posted on Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Lovingly pinched from The Sleeping Shaman: Writing about drone in many ways defeats the object, it undermines the genre’s primary purpose which is to send the listener into a trance-like state, devoid of thought. Anyone who knows of Bong know that they are the absolute masters of tripped out, ego-obliterating […]

Album of the day: Saint Vitus – Lillie F-65

Posted on Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

Lovingly pinched from Doommantia: One of the most anticipated doom metal albums is about to be released in a few weeks. Of course I am talking about Lillie: F-65  by doom legends Saint Vitus. A lot was riding on this album for me personally. I am a huge fan of […]

Album of the day: Alexander Tucker – Third Mouth

Posted on Monday, March 26th, 2012

Lovingly pinched from Dusted Reviews: Alexander Tucker constructs surreal landscapes out of the most natural materials: shifting major-to-minor key guitar patterns; the throb and drone of cello; a high, supple tenor that moves easily along melancholy, modal paths. Bits of synthesizer, found sound and electronic enhancements lurk in the crevices of […]

Album of the day: Angel Witch – As Above, So Below

Posted on Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Lovingly pinched from Metal Injection: Legendary British heavy metallers Angel Witch have risen from the grave (once again) with their first studio album since 1998’s Resurrection. This new album, entitled As Above, So Below, is undeniable proof that a classic NWOBHM sound can survive and even thrive in today’s metal […]

The Day After The Sabbath is a blog specialising in regular compilations of obscure heavy 60s and 70s rock. It’s Rich’ aim to reveal the secret world of bands that were inspired by the early psychedelic, doom and hard rock greats but were too short-lived, un-commercial or just plain unlucky […]

Album of the day: Ancestors – In Dreams and Time

Posted on Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Lovingly pinched from the Obelisk: As massive as the riffs were on Ancestors’ 2008 Tee Pee Records debut, Neptune with Fire (originally also the band’s demo), their largesse pales in comparison to the distance of stylistic ground the band has covered since. The progression away from that album’s two-song Sleep-derived […]
