Terrorizer Rockhard

Hexvessel: Quality Live-footage from Dark Bombastic Evening 3 Available on Youtube

Quality-filmed video footage of Hexvessel‘s August 20th, 2011 performance at Dark Bombastic Evening 3 in Romania can be seen below.

Hexvessel — A psychedelic, haunting, folk rock band, founded by Englishman Mat “Kvohst” McNerney, known previously as a vocalist for avant blackmetal bands Dødheimsgard and Code, now living in Helsinki, Finland and joined by a coven of musicians from Tampere that feature members of Galacticka and Dark Buddha Rising. As Aquarius Records quite rightly said “his talents were wasted screeching and shrieking over black buzz,” and now he is deeply embroiled with his death-hippie cohorts in creating a witches brew of acoustic balladry and heavy tripped-out atmospherics that fuses late 1960s and early 1970s English folk and psychedelia with a love for Finnish nature, folklore and pagan mysticism.

Recalling the vibes of brethren like Woven Hand, Comus, Sixteen Horsepower, Burial Hex, Espers, Six Organs Of Admittance and and Mellow Candle but also forging their own unique and uncanny own special atmosphere where nature, magic and the wonder of the universe are called forth in a passionate, urgent and gorgeously strange musical spell. They dub their band The Death Magicians, they call their sound “Interior-world-music for secret ceremonies and forest rituals,” and they cite Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band and the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 as some of their biggest influences.

Photos and today’s thoughts on this greatest of all news,
by Stefan Raduta

Today I woke up to some the most amazing of all news possible. The kind that even if you’re considered a grown up, you forget about all that and just start jumping up and down in your bed like a 9 year old kid that got the best gift he’s dreaming of without even expecting it. Thankfully my girlfriend is not at home, so she can’t see the retard she’s dating.

OK. Let’s just say that I had a few ‘suspicions’ that Virus would play Roadburn 2012. Easily one of the winning tickets on a bill where every single name is a winning ticket – it’s the most beautiful festival in the world, after all. It’s expected.

But. Hexvessel and Dark Buddha Rising though…Mother Of God!

OK so right now this very moment, with just the few names that have been announced so far I can guarantee you that 2012 will be quite possibly the best year for Roadburn yet…or let’s just say that it has that potential (because this year was surreal!), and again, just a few names have been announced.

It’s hard to say something like that and I’m known to be a bit too enthusiastic at times (that would be the understatement of the year), but if I was after all on the money with Wovenhand and Swans this year. I have a taste for these things, I may be crazy but I know what I’m talking about.

Hexvessel and Dark Buddha Rising… I am speechless. I have seen over 100 concerts this year, most of them in the span of one month only. Hexvessel, whom I caught up with at Dark Bombastic Evening 3 (you’ll read about it soon, it’s a fantastic up and coming festival – a baby Roadburn in the coming if you will – held in Alba Iulia, a medieval fortress in the heart of Romania) were by far one of the most equally intense and healing experiences ever for me, and I am not ashamed to admit I had tears in my eyes throughout the whole thing…

The good kind of tears, that you don’t know if they come from the sadness of the music you’re experiencing, or from the happiness of being there and then. They didn’t come because I have always seen Kvohst as one of the most amazing genuine geniuses of Norway (right up there with Czral) and I worship Code (which to me, now that he left the band, is no longer irrelevant, whatever they come up with), but because what happened on stage that day. I was mesmerized. Everyone was just in awe…and it’s not only Kvohst’s superb voice (seriously, he’s incredible!) but the music itself is so powerful…it’s as if they pull your heart out and show it to you!

Seriously, both bands have checked out of this world while ago and you can not miss this.

So, stranger. I am willing to make another bet with you, that Hexvessel and Dark Buddha Rising put together can be for next year what Wovenhand were for this year.

Fight me!
