Album of the day: Purple Rhinestone Eagle – The Great Return

Lovingly pinched from Mixedvegetablez: There’s something about the sound of analog recordings that just can’t be replicated digitally. Sure, Pro-Tools has it’s merits, but if you want your record to sound like it was pulled out of a crack in space and time, let’s face it, you’re going to have to track to tape. So on that note, let’s talk about some analogue worshiping shamanistas from Portland, OR, Purple Rhinestone Eagle.

Like some of my favorite Swedish bands, these gals are mining all kinds of obscure and forgotten nuggets from the primordial era of heavy metal and crafting a denim vested record collector’s wet dream with artisan skill. The band’s latest LP, The Great Return, has “lost classic” smeared all over it, so let’s just talk about the damn record before this review gets too hacky for its own good.

The Great Return is one of those records where each side has its own distinct character. Side A, which focuses on more of a classic doom sound, opens with a dark, psychedelic guitar riff over sparse percussion and a simple bass line before blasting into some full-on Pentagram-style riffing. The spaceship has landed! A series of attention grabbing, mid-song tempo changes make ‘No Space Nukes’ a worthy opener. Going deeper into the album, the listener is drawn into a vibrant world of enchantment and mystery, where dark, minor key melodies and hypnotic, pulsing rhythm play compliment to lyrics about the change of seasons, life, death and rebirth.
