 ”Aluk Todolo was yet another show I couldn’t miss, and boy, what a treat!! Yet again a memorable moment, their set equally fascinated and freaked me out to the point where I started seeing things…scary things. I’ll admit there were certain performances at Roadburn where music stopped being just music, it got so intense I felt time literally stopped and for a few brief moments I wanted to go even further, by trying some serious chronics. \

Ah, if only by miracle one could push a button and return to reality. Never quite tried anything heavy, but if there was ever a time for me to try acid and do some irreparable damage – Aluk Todolo would have been the ultimate one way trip to hell. Damn!

Since their 2007 Descension debut the French trio stirred quite a wave in the underground, and especially with Finisteris in 2009, there’s been such a high interest towards them. And it wasn’t because of the members being associated with black metal acts like acts like Diamatregon or Blacklodge. The music itself feels quintessentially evil, it’s like a void that sucks you in, messing with your mind although you can’t quite put a finger on what it is.

Very few bands make music like this today and especially live – talk about a total mindfuck! Harsh noise, scary and haunting riffs, Aluk Todolo is the definition of sonic flagellation. Stylistically, you could see it as krautrock running into black metal and complete sleep depravation, all wrapped up in barbwire and freakish nightmares. It’s psychedelic beyond belief, at one point every drumbeat felt like a knife stab, almost like whips… They played with minimal lighting; all they had was one light bulb hanging from the ceiling – very minimal, it made perfect sense.
