Transylvanian Hungerrr: Wovenhand – An Interview With David Eugene Edwards

I don’t know the exact date when the line-up for Roadburn 2011 went from ridiculous to outrageous, but one thing is certain: next year’s event will be the bomb. Having managed to skillfully dodge that damn volcano last year, the organizers seem to have been keen on making next year’s experience a truly unforgettable one.

As a promoter, how do you manage to bring together such a vast array of phenomenal artists? As a musician and a fan, how do you decide on who you want to see? I haven’t even booked my plane ticket yet and I’m getting dizzy just looking at every night’s line-up, some tough f’n choices will have to be made…like how do I choose between Yob’s special set and seeing Swans? Can I run fast enough from The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble to Winterfylleth and Year of no Light? Fuckk! I’m sure you all have your own dilemmas…

One thing is certain: this amazing festival is all about quality. I’ve always believed that amazing music knows no boundaries of form, that it’s not about what it sounds like, but what it does to you inside. A superb group like Wardruna can be (and will be!) just as intense and electrifying as Godflesh, much like Sigur Ros can be as transcending as Watain. You are what you listen in the end, and the more you open your eyes, the more you let your heart tell you what it likes, the more you have to gain.

I don’t think I would enjoy listening to Dead Can Dance or Rome as much as I do today, had I never worshiped Dissection and Darkthrone in my teenager years. Never forget that we are all a part of something truly special, and the underground metal scene is not only a unlimited source of beauty in itself, but a portal to everything else.

Two years ago I crossed paths with a group that once and for all answered a simple question for me: what does heavy really mean? Is it about speed, blast beats? Is it about  who can come up with the nastiest, raunchiest riffs? Is it about sheer volume? Is it about image, about who’s looking scarier or who cuts himself the deepest? Who’s heavier, Sadistik Exekution or Portal? How stupid does that even sound?

What if heavy is not about any of this nonsense, but about message first? About real fucking honesty down to the bone’s marrow, and not a pissing contest on who can be the most intimidating? What if less is more? What if really heavy can also lie in simplicity and humbleness, and not always in attitude and opulence?

I think Denver’s Wovenhand is by far the most awesome and exotic addition to Roadburn yet. And because of their message, it is the most daring. They won’t need the great Sunn O)))’s countless amps and cabinets / special effects to really reach inside you, instead they’ll bring an Indian rug, a Gretsch, a badass Thunderbird and a wooden banjo that’s older than your great grandmother. See what happens. I’m absolutely persuaded that they’re not only gonna be the cherry on top of the cake at Roadburn 2011, but they might just steal the festival from underneath everyone’s feet. Yes, a Christian band (that’s praised by the likes of Marduk, Primordial, Rwake and many more) will knock you out.

Please don’t miss their set, it’s really quite something else, and will stand out like nothing else. And while the article / videos below are meant to give you an idea of how awesome they are, it doesn’t even come close to do them justice, it’s just a poor attempt of saying thank you. To them, to their diehard fans that kept them going, to Roadburn for a genius decision.

deep asleep as wolves
who rise to worship their dreams
under the mountain
thin as thieves
armed to the teeth
we have the same hands
not one stone atop another will stand

On the road with Wovenhand
a story by Stefan Raduta

“When I’m on stage I want to rip your throat off with the music, I want to beat you into a pulp with the law. I bring the law, I bring it! So you wanted to live by it? You wanna know what’s good and evil? OK, let’s talk about it, if you wanna live by your expectations or someone else’s. But I know that you can’t do it, and I wanna help you get there real quick, to the point where you realize that you’re completely hopeless without the mercy of God”David Eugene Edwards
