Documentaries at Roadburn 2010; Japanese Extreme Metal The Documentary

Once again the V39 basement will serve as the screening room for several documentaries during the festival. The V39 is directly across from the main entrance to the 013.

We are proud to announce that in cooperation with Visual Justice Films we will be showing Japanese Extreme Metal, The Documentary. A documentary that transcends stereotypes and entrenched perceptions of nationality, society and subcultures. Japanese Extreme Metal: The Documentary is the brainchild of Mark Keller, the singer for the Tokyo based band  Detritum.

Keller is a 14 year veteran of Japan and his fascinating exposé of the extreme metal scene in this supposedly most conservative of nations blows the lid off the commonly held misconception that bubble gum pop and boy bands offer Eastern youth the only homegrown teats to suckle on for their musical nourishment.

“Japan is a gold mine of amazing and original extreme music, largely undiscovered. Please realize that Japanese people are quite shy and getting interviews out of them can be like pulling teeth, but they have amazing talents and imaginations when it comes to extreme music. In this documentary I traveled from Da-Saitama to Tokyo, to Osaka trying to get those rotten teeth pulled. So please, sit back, put your feet up, and enjoy the pain. Saviour this small taste of what is one of the largest and most intense underground scenes in the world today.”

Thanks to director/producer John Srebalus, we will also be showing Such Hawks Such Hounds [ Scenes From The American Hard Rock Underground], a documentary on stoner, doom, proto-metal, psych & hard rock from the 70′s ’til now. It’s a passionate exploration of all the important moments in American Hard Rock history, from Sir Lord Baltimore and Pentagram, to Kyuss and the Desert Rock scene, to Sleep’s Jerusalem endeavor, to the Man’s Ruin label in San Francisco.
