Roadburn 2010 will see the triumphant arrival of Dr Simon Von Strange, along with his cohorts Emily Pentangle and the nefarious Randolph T. Reaper; where they will unleash their dark twisted formula that is The Lamp of Thoth (Saturday, April 17th).
Described by some as a seriously unbalanced, eccentric mix of NWOBHM and the Doom cults, The Lamp of Thoth will raise the spirits of dread eldritch horrors and enslave you to bang your head and worship in the name of Heavy Metal!
All Give Praise To Satan – Roadburn Loves The Lamp!!!
“The Lamp of Thoth have been heralded for some time now as one of the leading lights of a new doom metal generation. They won that acclaim on a strength and an individuality that was ferocious and raw. The demo and the 10″ were killer salvos of doom, but you could tell they were still finding the right bit, bridle and reigns with which to ride the beast they had created. Well, with this their first full length (Portents, Omens & Doom), they have found that full grasp with a bar of iron and a length of hangman’s rope. A step up for sure, but not a single drop of rawness sacrificed. This is some of the most assaultive, in your face doom metal to rip speakers ever” - Mike Ballue, HellrideMusic.com

Oh, this is also about Stoner Rock? I thought Walter throw those bands out and replaced them with shitty Black Metal stuff and evil metalfans all in black. I`m personally waiting for some Sludge or even Noisecore. Or interesting stuff like The Sontaran Experiment/Celan/Flood/Subrig Destroyer/The Roller/Jail. And where are those small underground bands that made Roadburn so unique in past times?
I agree with Andre. Roadburn seems to be turning from stoner/doom to blackmetal. But there are still some bands to be confirmed, so I keep my fingers crossed.
Let’s just say from our side that we do not think in genres: we like or we don’t like. If we like we invite if we don’t like we don’t. Isn’t talking in genres so 20 something? Jurgen is 38 and I’m in my 40s so we are past all that
.
Roadburn Festival has become Europe’s leading underground festival for psychedelic, avant-garde, doom or any other variation of leftfield sonic pleasures that push the boundaries of music -it’s not solely a stoner festival.
Bear all this in mind, and then have a closer look at the line-up: You’ll notice that there’s no straight black metal act to be found at Roadburn:
- Nachtmystium’s set will pan hard to the band’s psychedelic inspired material.
- Altar of Plagues is more organic black metal, with influences ranging from post rock to industrial.
- Enslaved’s set will also pan hard towards their psychedelic inspired material.
- Enslaved / Shining (NO) Big Band is more prog rock, black jazz inspired with hints of doom and psychedelica.
-Indeed there are still other bands to be announced, ranging from sludge to doom, from stoner to psychedelica and from post rock to heavy 70′s.

The Lamp sounds pretty camp! Musically and lyrically it’s entertaining but that guy’s voice started to severely annoy me after a few minutes.
Re: what Walter wrote…
Keep Roadburn history in mind. Just because the 2010 line-up isn’t shaping up to your specific preferences doesn’t necessarily mean the festival is forever doomed (get it, har har) to disappoint you or become a seething evil vortex of “black metal.”
If you look back over the years, each edition of the festival has had a certain flavor, whether it’s subtle or strongly pronounced. One could argue that “x year was more Roadburn[stonerrock/doom/etc] than x year” depending on the bands on the bill, but a lot of that comes down to personal preference and what you define as “Roadburn.”
Personally, I worried that Roadburn 2008 signalled a turning point in the wrong direction. Compared to 2003, 2004 and 2006 I didn’t think it was very “Roadburn.”
Down? No comment.
Enslaved? I refused to give them a chance. Too upset about not being able to catch Celtic Frost (which unlike Enslaved did qualify as Roadburn material; why? totally subjective) again on the mighty Monotheist tour. AND because rumor also had it that we would also be treated to Mor-bid Tay-ullz. (OOH!)
Trouble? Even without Kory Clarke in tow I was so underwhelmed I walked out after five minutes.
A curator? “Bah,” I thought to myself, “that sounds pretentious.”
I roamed around the 013, vainly searching for something to catch my ears. I gave up and thought, “Wow, so this is what it has come to. Down and some drunken Swedish guy covered in blood screaming at security. Great. Happy Roadburn, people. I’m outta here.”
Then Roadburn ’09 proved to be one of my favorite editions; actually, it rates as one of the best festival experiences I’ve ever had!
Maybe 2010 is shaping up to be too black metal or too droney or too doomy or too avant gardey or too whatever for you. Or maybe not.
In the words of one of Roadburn’s unofficial mascots: “Some you win, some you lose!”
you say you don’t ‘talk in genres,’ but really, if you read the description of any band on the bill, you list a slew of genres as a description of the band. talking in genres is a necessary evil – everyone does it, there’s not sense denying it.
personally, i don’t think the bands billed so far are laid back enough for me. they’re all so intense. give me an old-school line-up of colour haze, brant bjork, astrosoniq, and hawkwind, and i might start to consider whether or not i want to shell out 145 bucks (plus service charge).
that said, im not about to think that roadburn isn’t what it used to be, im just waiting for another edition to come along with bands that are more up my alley. until then, ill spend 145 bucks on various club shows.
We meant as a festival. Roadburn is neither a stoner or a black metal festival. And in addition to that: we make the festival the best festival as possible for us. We’re not doing it for the stoner crowd or the black metal crowd. If that was the case I think Walter and me would rather stop right now. Of course it’s a compliment that people are commited to the festival and attach certain ideas to it. We feel honored by the compliments people pay us. But we don’t feel obligated to cater to the crowd that was at Roadburn 10 years ago, or even last years. If people don’t like that, that’s the way it is.
