Album of the day: High Tide – Sea Shanties
Posted on Monday, November 30th, 2009
Lovingly pinched from The Ripple Effect: Imagine if you will the unholy bastard child of the Doors psychedelica and early Sabbath heaviness with an electric violin tire-ironed into the mix in the place of Ray Manzarek’s organ. Now if that sounds a little hard to put your finger on, imagine that violin not being content to hang out in the back ground, playing gentle atmospherics and fey melodies, but instead going head to head with the lead guitar, flying off on epic battles of searing leads while the bass and drums pound out a relentlessly heavy bottom end, all mixed in with Jim Morrison on vocals.
That’s High Tide.
I can’t imagine anyone knew what to make of Sea Shanties when it was first released in 1969. While the Beatles were happily singing that they all lived in a yellow submarine, and CCR was releasing their first three albums, High Tide unleashed this ungodly, glorious mess of a record onto the English public.

The Exile of Satan from Heavy Metal Design: the art of Seldon Hunt, Stephen O’Malley & Aaron Turner
Posted on Sunday, November 29th, 2009
Those “heavy metal” bands that debuted during that first palmy MTV generation sound like nontoxic pop compared to today’s vast offerings of subaltern metal genres, where intricate is the new heavy, and glacially slow is far more radical than hyperfast. Metal has evolved in such diverse directions—drawing from and crossing ...read more

Gnaw Their Tongues: Terrorizer band of the day
Posted on Friday, November 27th, 2009
Find out why our good friends over at Terrorizer just can’t stop writing about Gnaw Their Tongues: Since 2005 Dutch-based Gnaw Their Tongues has been damaging the pleasure/pain receptors in the psyches of curious (possibly masochistic) listeners with a densely orchestrated sound as alienating, chaotic, debauched and sadistic as any ...read more

Album of the day: Part Chimp – Thriller
Posted on Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Lovingly pinched from BBC Music: Riff monsters they may be, but Part Chimp have often resembled a rather benign kind of beast. Sure, their ungodly speaker-stacks are fit to rend the ground asunder, resonating on a level that somehow unites the earthly and the cosmic. Yet maybe it’s some combination ...read more

Posted on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
Lovingly pinched from HellrideMusic.com: To say that it has been a rocky and difficult path on the way to Iron Man’s fourth full length album would be an understatement. It has been nine years and countless line up changes since Generation Void. That kind of turmoil can take a serious ...read more
