Lovingly pinched from our dear friends at Terrorizer: With the announcement that Candlemass are going to be playing the entirety of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus at Roadburn next year I thought there would be no better time to provide some expert testimony as to exactly how incredible the whole event really is.
I had the pleasure of speaking to Neurosis at the festival last year and as you’ll read, they were feeling the wicked vibes too. Thought I’d throw the other bits and bobs that didn’t make it to the mag in as well. Happy worshipping!

THE ROADBURN SPIRIT
Scott Kelly: “That’s the big question. What IS that? It’s the unspoken, whether it is some sort of spiritual connection or old blood or however you perceive god or whatever. It’s that. There’s a commonality that’s unspoken that people just understand. When you get enough of those people in the same room together it tends to spread to everyone else. That’s why we’re doing this day here. We just felt with Walter [Hoeijmakers, Roadburn organizer] and everybody else that THAT would be here.
All you have to do is just look at bands they book every year. You just know that they know what’s going on. They understand how this stuff works. For us the sonic religion is like any belief system, there’s a way to do it and there’s a way not to do it. There’s a way to get there and there’s a way not to get there. But every year we play here – I’ve played here three years in a row – it feels good. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything even hostile. No fights. I don’t think it would ever happen. You’d have to be a real asshole to do that here.”
