Roadburn playlist June (Jurgen)

Obviously, we need good music on the stereo while we are busy putting together the 2010 edition of the festival. Be on the lookout for updates from time to time on what’s spinning on the Roadburn turntable, CD player and Winamp player (And if you are on Last.fm, come join us here). This is Jurgen’s playlist for June 2009. Share your personal Top 5 in the comments box below.

1. 13th Floor Elevators – Sign of the 3 eyed men (10CD, International Artists)
As I’ve said before on the foreverdoomed forum and twitter this box set can hold it’s own next to the lavishly released Charley Patton and Albert Ayler boxes on Revenant. There’s the box, there’s the book inside the box, there’s all of the info inside the book. And of course there’s the music. In addition to versions of all of their studio albums, the set also contains live CDs, mono versions and alternative takes. It took me an entire weekend to listen to everything but it was worth it!
2. Menace RuineThe Die Is Cast (CD, Alien8)
Nadja fronted by Nico. Mesmerising stuff here, reminiscent of The Angelic Process.
3. Altar of PlaguesWhite Tomb (CD, Profound Lore)
If you like Wolves in the Throne Room and Negura Bunget-style organic
black metal, check this out! Four lengthy songs with a potent mix of
atmosphere and aggression.
4. 1349Revelations of the Black Flame (CD, Candlelight)
This is not the old 1349, this is the new. Injected with a heavy dose of Tom Fischer’s Celtic Frost experimental drifts (he guests on the album), this is experimental, not straightforward, black metal. They are not there yet, but I like the route they are taking.
5. Gnaw Their TonguesAll The Dread Magnificence of Perversity (2LP, Burning World Records)
Hey, it’s on my label so what do you expect! Black, dark, satanic, apocalyptic, funeral doom, call it what you will but this album captures the very essence of one-man nightmare Gnaw Their Tongues. This album is bound to ruin your summer.
