Album of the day: Acid King – Busse Woods
Posted on Thursday, June 25th, 2009
(From our archives): Acid King’s Busse Woods makes a definitive statement of heaviness that more than makes up for their small number of releases. Interesting then, how this enormously dark and heavy CD is characterized by its laid back feel. There is no angst and bombast here, just super large fuzz riffs unfurled with taste and atmosphere.
The singer, guitarist and songwriter of this San Francisco power trio is Lori S and while it seems like the phrase “ex-wife-of-Melvins-drummer-Dale” is part of her name, her ability to make music needs no qualifications. Just put on Busse (pronounced buss-ee) Woods and find out what she can do.

Album of the day: Mammatus – S/T
Posted on Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
(From our archives): Mammatus hits you like a truck. Albeit a truck painted in psychedelic swirly colours, piloted by a strung out lunatic who’s using the accelerator like a wah pedal. Formed as far back as 2005, Mammatus are leading the vanguard of the new wave of psychedelic heavy rock ...read more
Album of the album: Cathedral – The Garden of Unearthly Delights
Posted on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
The recent Cathedral albums while replete with voluminous riffs lacked the quirky, anachronistic otherworldliness which makes them so endearing, especially Lee Dorian’s livid Moorcock / Colin Wilson prose extolling the pleasures of myopic zombies, malevolent magi, and all other manner of devilish, altered states chicanery coupled with Garry Jennings’s cavernous ...read more

Pitchfork.com rates Dinosaur Jr’s Farm: 8.5
Posted on Monday, June 22nd, 2009
Beyond, the first album to feature the original Dinosaur Jr. lineup since their 1980s heyday, was so surprisingly good it was tempting to call it a fluke. Tempting, but wrong– two years after its release, it still sounds great, on par with the early, hallowed triumvirate of Dinosaur, You’re Living ...read more

Album of the day: The Pink Fairies – Finland Freakout 1971
Posted on Sunday, June 21st, 2009
Wow… What a major gem of a find. This group of drugged out rockers played a spaced out high energy set of raw, raw, freak rock at Findland’s Ruisrock in ‘71. It all begins with a special distorted and twisted version of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ by the Beatles.
